Hi everyone!  I'm 2 years out of a TNBC diagnosis. Currently I'm off work with depression. I've been put on citalopram. Is it safe for me to take citalopram?  I have googled ( I know stupid me)  and seen  that some antidepressants can cause breast cancer??? Now I'm worried. Hope someone can help?Blush

  • Hello MAZDA26

I have taken Nortriptylene for depression most of my life and my oncologist/surgeon told me to carry on. If you are really concerned I would speak to your breast care team and see what they say. I don’t know why you have depression but if it would help to talk to someone ask your GP or see a private counsellor. For me the talking helped immensely and I just take the tablets because I need to. I hope you find your way through this time. It will lift.

Thanks Alison for your reply.  I'm having counselling and the tablets are working, so I'll stick to them for a while.  Everything had got on top of me at once, but I'm getting better BlushBlush

  • Bless you. Glad you’re feeling a bit better. We all have blips and that is ok.

I've been on Citalopram for several years due to anxiety - long story. Never heard this anti-depressant can cause cancer.

I was diagnosed with TNBC Grade 3 in June this year.

When I saw the oncologist to discuss my treatment she reviewed all my prescribed medication & told me to continue taking Citalopram.

If you are still under review by your Breast Care Team, perhaps you should contact them or your GP to discuss your concerns.

I've been through 4 rounds of chemotherapy (9th July to 26th Sept), had surgery - lumpectomy & lymph nodes removed (20th Oct), due to start radiotherapy in a few weeks.

Stay safe & take great care of yourself.
