Triple negative, grade 2 breast cancer

Hi,

I was diagnosed on 16 October.  My surgery is on 14th November, no chemo to start as the tumour measures 14mm.

I'm ok with the diagnosis now as I have a very supportive family, but I live alone.

They will taking between 1 to 3 lymph nodes while having Sentinel lymph node surgery, has anyone had this proceedure?

My concern is how much will I be able to do with my right arm following the surgery?  Some  people at a recent Macmilan meeting said the lymph node surgery is worse than the lumpectomy.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks x

    Hi

Warm welcome to the club no one wants to join :-/

Having a SLNB (sentinel lymph node biopsy) at the same time as breast surgery is very common; in fact most have this carried out.

A tracer dye is injected and 'tracked' back and they remove 2 or 3 of the nearest nodes to the tumour to check if any cancer cells are present - This doesn't usually cause any major issues.

A lot of those who can have problems with pain or seroma fluid is where those patients have had a lymph node clearance where all the nodes up to level 2 of 3 are removed. This can be as many as 25 nodes.

While you are around, you could also join the Main Breast Group here. As the treatments for Triple Neg are the same and the main group is a lot more active. It will be at least 4 weeks post surgery before any chemo is started as you need to be fully healed.

Do reply back here or in the main group if you have any surgery related questions ?

Good luck for a speedy, hassle free recovery, G n' J

    Hiya

I had a lumpectomy back in January with 3 lymph nodes removed, i can honestly say that i felt hardly any pain. Nothing that couldn't be sorted by a couple of paracetamol. Its surprising how much it isn't painful just more uncomfortable. You may be given some exercises to do after your surgery which helps keep your arm mobile, i had no problems using my arm afterwards.

Just keep on top with the pain killers and you should be fine xxx

  • Dear ScriptFan,

Thanks for your assuring reply.  I was beginning to think I wouldn't be able to do much for myself for two weeks.

You must be quite a way through your treatment plan now, how are you doing?  Do you have the same cancer as me?

It would be good to keep in touch, if you'd like to? xxx

  • Hi

I've recently had 2 nodes removed from my left side and had two removed from my right side in 2017.

I didn't have any problems at all but have kept up with the exercises they give you and tried to be as active as possible.

    Hope you're doing ok x
