Hi there...

I’m about to have surgery in 3 weeks and I am really struggling to decided which option to go for ! I recently finished chemo and although I felt pleased that part was over, I have since gone into a bit of meltdown with my nerves all on end so not helping me decide. I had frightening allergic reaction to last one... was anaemic and feeling absolutely wiped out too. Also, i I don’t think it has helped by a friend who visited me before my last chemo and was constantly asking why I wasn’t automatically requesting a mastectomy... even though I explained what my surgeon had said. In her opinion all the TNBC ladies she knows has mastectomies.. she she has been discussing this with my daughter too who is usually my rock but has also sent her into a worrying panic that I’m going to make right choice.

I have had meetings with my surgeon and now have to decide

ii was diagnosed last Dec with TNBC 18mm grade 3 from routine mammogram ... I couldn’t feel lump and my oncologist struggled also. Chemo hasn’t shrunk it by much but said it looks diff in composition on ultrasound.

So my options are WLE lumpectomy v Therapeutic mammoplasty - lumpectomy with reduction -

At 1st meeting with surgeon he did mention getting wider margins with mammoplasty... which has stuck in my mind-

But at 2nd meeting he stressed more on mammoplasty being more of a cosmetic option than the margins

although I do have quite large boobs 42D for my smallish frame they aren’t too bad.

any advice or info would be so helpful please See no evil

    Hi

I had a lumpectomy and thermal mamoplasty last May on my left breast, I’m TN and my lump was lower quadrant and I’m a 38DD which is why I was offered a lumpectomy as I have ample assets and as the lump was lower they could use breast saving techniques rather than a mastectomy which is lumps found higher in the breast or for smaller sized women, hope this helps you.

Hi Amanda  thank you for your reply

my lump is upper quadrant and at 12 o’clock .. so I’m not sure if lumpectomy would leave me with a more visible scar or if mammoplasty would be better option.

can I please ask how you were after the operation with recovery etc... and also will you need to have further surgery on your other breast if so how long after is that likely to be.

i finished 5 months of chemo last week leaving me really low and anaemic and need to build up before surgery...3 weeks time. Think I will start to feel better when I can decide on which surgery to go for.

    Good Friyay evening

I went with what the surgeon advised me to do as I had the stance that they know better than what I do so I didn’t have to think that much about it, I was also asked to join the 1000 genome project, have you been offered any genetics?

I also had a sentinel node biopsy at the same time and they managed this through the same incision so I only had 1 rather than another under the armpit, the drains were the worst thing after surgery and luckily I had them all removed after the 2nd day, doesn’t hurt having them took out and they don’t hurt pursee they are just so uncomfortable.

nice soft crop tops (mine were from Morrison’s) are a must, comfy jarmas or nighty ready for a few days in bed, I brought arnica cream to help with the bruising but I struggled more with the nerve pain than anything, it’s not nice, it’s bloody horrible but it’s do-able and you will get through it, we have to .

ive was offered reducing surgery on the other breast so havnt  taken it, I can live with it and to be honest in a bra they look the same, but it took me a long time to see that.

I had my lumpectomy, thermo mamoplasty, SNB first, 8 chemos 4 x EC & 4 x Dox, 25 radiotherapies followed,  now back at work living life, you can get here too xx

    Hi Amanda

thank your reply and for the info .. a big help

I agree... I will go along with surgeon.. I will discuss my concerns and see what he suggests... I will then have to make the decision and stick to it!

Im glad it went well with your surgery and can sympathise with you on the nerve pain... I suffer with it anyway but am struggling quite a bit with it at the minute...and the neuropathy which is from the Paclitaxel. Hopefully it will ease with time now I have finished chemo.

thanks again for your replies and wishing you well Kissing heart

    Diane xx
