Awaiting Diagnosis

Hi all,

I'm currently awaiting the results of a recent core biopsy on my thyroid, and wanted to pop in to say hello as I'm anxious about what the results will be.

I had a routine neck ultrasound a couple of weeks ago due to my dad dying of medullary thyroid cancer last year, and it picked up that a small nodule had grown massively since my last scan a year ago - it's now the same size as the entire left lobe. Since then I've seen an ENT consultant and had a biopsy - the consultant felt it's likely that I'll need surgery regardless of the biopsy results due to the size of the nodule and the potential for it to become more problematic in the future if it isn't already.

I'm prepared for the biopsy to show that the nodule is cancerous and I'm ok with that to an extent, as long as it's treatable, but because the nodule has grown so rapidly in a year I'm terrified that it's going to be anaplastic thyroid cancer and that the prognosis will be poor. The doctor who did the biopsy said it could turn out to just be an inflammation caused by thyroiditis so I'm hoping that's the case, but trying to brace myself for it being cancerous. The wait for results is torturous!

Anyway, thank you for reading my ramblings - I'm not expecting any replies (although you're more than welcome to say hello!), but it's been useful to get this off my chest, so thank you if you've read this post Slight smile

  • Hello

    Welcome to the Online Community.

I am sorry to hear that you have recently had a biopsy and are waiting to hear whether it is cancerous or not. I understand it is a worrying time. Do give the Support Line a call if it would help to talk things through with one of the nurses. They are there from 8am-8pm everyday and are lovely. They will understand how tough it can be while waiting for a diagnosis.

I am sorry to hear about your father and understand that this may bring extra memories and worries.

I found sharing with others on the Online Community really helped during my own cancer journey and please feel free to share here and get the support you need.

I hope it has helped to get it all off your chest. I think the vast majority- if not all people on here understand how tough the waiting is. For me I actually found it better to know for sure because then a plan was put in place.

I think some of the best advice I was given is to focus on what you know and deal with anything else if/when it arises. At the moment you have a nodule and they are looking to see what it is. You know that surgery may be offered due to the size. You do not yet know whether there is cancer there or if there is what type- so try to put those thoughts to the side until you know for sure. Once you know for sure then deal with that step. Everything one step at a time or it can feel overwhelming.

I hope you get your results back quickly but in the meantime we are here if you need us.

    Jane

  • Thank you so much, Jane - I've definitely been leaping ahead and trying to prepare myself for bad news when I don't actually know anything yet, so I'll take your advice and just focus on what I DO know. Thank you for using your own experience to support others - I really appreciate your kind message Slight smile
