Hello all
Its been five weeks since my RAI and 7 weeks since my second op to remove what was left of my thyroid. Am now back at work after 2 months off and very very tired. Fortunately work are being understanding so if I'm too tired, I can go home. My scan came back clear and am now up to 150mgs of levothyroxine. I see my Gp for a blood test in a few weeks then back to see the consultant a few weeks after that.
I saw the surgeon last week for a follow up and need to see her again in 6 months. Its likely one vocal cord has been damaged irrepairable. However small price to pay given what the alternative was.
I'm having some side effects which are really beginning to upset me and wondered if it is actually my thyroid or whether this is something else so am hoping that someone here can help me. Firstly my hair loss which I know is down to thyroid. Its not slowing down any and I'm now almost completely bald at the sides of my head. Some is growing back so I have inch long strands flying around all over the place. My hair is also very greasy at the roots and very dry at the ends. Does anyone have any tips.
On Friday I noticed that I had this weird discolouration on my forehead - its like brown patches of skin. This morning I noticed that I have a brown patch appearing at the bridge of my nose. Thyroid? And any tips - hellish enough having to cover up my scar at work (i work with the public in crisis and don't want people to notice) so have no idea how to cover this up if it spreads any further..
Yesterday we were out for a wee while. I have the most horrendous sunburn on my arms and shoulders. I live in Scotland and have never been sunburnt before. Is that also thyroid related? Today I have factor 50 on so hopefully I've solved this myself.
I know the slowness thought process is normal but any tips on if there is any way to improve this - I really sometimes find that I just can't think straight which is a nightmare.
Thank you in advance - I really didn't know that one wee gland could create so much trouble!
Heya,
So you had your thyroid out in September, got the results from your specialist in October and then..... Nothing at all?
You say you've just found out about how to take thyroxine - so first thing in the morning, no food or drink, other than water, or other medication for a minimum of 30 mins but 60 is better. So can I ask how you were taking it before?
At a guess, I'm presuming you've been taking it at the same time as having your breakfast? If so, chances are the food and drink has stopped you from absorbing the thyroxine. This will then possibly have resulted in you becoming hypothyroid. If so, then 8 weeks from Monday, so take the thyroxine properly for 8 weeks, get yourself a nurses appointment to ask for a TFT - thyroid function test. Ask that they make sure to test for TSH, T4, and TG. (Thyroid stimulating hormone, T4, and thyroglobulin)
Just to check, when you say you've been getting ill - do you mind sharing what's been going on?

I have no medical training, everything I post is an opinion or educated guess. It is not medical advice.
My goodness that was a long time ago.
The only book I've ever bought about thyroids - which is about pretty much everything that can go wrong with them (including cancer) was by Ain and Rosenthal. They're American. She's a writer and he's a doctor and I think they're very good. Just google the names and you should find it.
There's a massive gap in the market for a book about thyroid cancer. I've got several chapters written but somehow I never get that much further.
Best wishes
Barbara
