Hi everyone,

I’m wondering if anyone can share their experience about this! But I’ve been having heart palpitations ever since I had my thyroid taken out in September 2023. First I put it down to being over medicated with levothyroxine (my T4 was way too high at the beginning). My dose has been slowly lowered since then, 150mcg down to 100mcg in early February 2025. I feel much better than at the beginning when I was way into hyperthyroid levels. I haven’t had my blood test confirming I’m “in range” but that’s not July unfortunately!

The heart palpitations are a few times a week, only a second or two. I’ve only had 1 that really shocked me and went on for longer, maybe 5-10seconds. But they seem to be getting more regular now unfortunately, even though my levothyroxine dose has been lowered?

Googling heart palpitations tends to come back saying they’re not that serious. But they make me quite anxious and are distracting when they happen - I recently had one whilst cycling in a foreign city, a bit jarring when trying to concentrate. What if I have one when driving?

Quite the ramble but I guess I should ask my doctor about this. Just a bit worried as I’m 25 and would rather not have heart problems on top of everything else. I’m just confused as to why they are continuing, I never had heart palpitations before my thyroid was taken out for papillary thyroid cancer. Thanks in advance for anyone who replies Slight smile Hope you are all doing well

  • There are many reasons to have palpitations, it could have been your levothyroxine and something else all along. I would make sure you see your GP but you can always mention it at your next oncology follow up as well. Hopefully you can get a GP review and reassurance for peace of mind or further investigation if needed
