Surgery waiting times

I had a hemi thyroidectomy at the end of January due to breathing difficulties rather than anything untoward (all biopsies were negative). However my results came back as papillary thyroid cancer. I somehow had been lost in the system and was not told until April 11th. My consultant said I would require further surgery within the month and iodine to follow.

5 weeks on and I have no date for surgery. The bookings team had advised me of a date for June 4th (7 weeks after my last appointment) and to await a letter. This letter did not arrive, nor has the secretary any recollection of this. All that is stated is I am on the ‘most urgent’ waiting list for surgery.

I am just looking for some advice, as communication with the NHS has been shocking. How long have people roughly waited to have the rest of their thyroid removed once their diagnosis was confirmed please?

thank you in advance

  • Hi Hayley

My experience was affected by brexit influence on guidelines. Hemi was in October and diagnosis advised to me in early January. Completion surgery was in August during covid and only 3/4 months after oncologist recommending that completion surgery was the right way ahead. RAI was 7 weeks later. Best wishes for the most successful outcome for you.

  • Thank you for your reply it’s much appreciated!

  • Hi, I’m so sorry you’ve had to wait so long! It probably depends on what area you are in but I was having mine in Chichester and my first and second surgery were actually 6 weeks apart to the day, so mine was really quick! You should definitely just keep ringing them and chasing it up as you don’t want to get lost in the system again! Hope all goes well with the second surgery and happy to answer any other questions you might have!

  • Thank you for your reply. I’ll definitely chase them up again!
