Low iodine diet ideas please

Hi all, hope you’re all okay.

I’ve followed the Low Iodine Diet (LID) before but it was about a year ago and I’ve completely gone blank as to what I even ate during the two weeks I was on it. I’m aware of the resources online but even so I feel they are quite vague and whenever I have gone to buy something and look at the ingredient list I feel confused if I’m allowed it e.g bread, broccoli, spinach, some say you’re allowed crisps but don’t these have a lot of salt? Also am I allowed almond milk?

I’m starting it again today for 2 weeks before my scan. Any help is welcome! Any nice recipes or ideas for food especially for breakfast? Also I’m in the UK so if there’s any recommendations of any shops and items they sell which you’d recommend I’d really like to know if that’s ok to do on here.

Thank you

  • I'm gutted to discover that the recipes I put on here years ago for guacamole, tomato salsa and houmous/hummus have all disappeared.
But, do a bit of googling and it should be quite easy to find ones that will be OK.

There are several LID recipe threads you can track down using the search bar.

    Best wishes

  • Thanks

I’ve had a go at making my own hummus - 2 cans of chickpeas, some cold water and a splash of olive oil and two pressed garlic gloves - it’s not too bad as a snack with cucumber, carrots etc.

google is being both helpful and unhelpful as there’s so many American websites that come up and I know we don’t need to follow the exact same guidelines in the UK, so I end up feeling confused about what is and isn’t allowed. One UK website would say something is OK and another website would advise against, so I thought to ask on here just for peace of mind. It does seem that my search history will be ‘can I have ___ on the low iodine diet’ for the next few weeks lol. I will have a go at making a LID friendly guacamole and salsa!

thanks for your reply and I hope you’re well x

  • Hi Pinkbluepurple, I did my LID diet and had RAI just before Xmas.  I think the thing is not to get too worried about the diet and remember it's a low iodine diet not a no iodine diet.  If you are like me I like to snack and had crisps, UK salt does not contain iodine, so they are ok, but I didn't have Chicken ones as they contained milk so best to check the packaging.  I ate Vegan cheese, just check ingredients that they do not contain Carrageenan as some do, some don't, I enjoyed Oreos (the original ones as they were fine, some of the newer flavours aren't, someone on here mentioned Oatie Biscuits which I like but never thought about those.  You can enjoy Dark Choc over 70% again I bought Vegan choc, also Soya yogurts, Dairy Free Cream with tinned fruit.  Didn't buy Vegan Ice Cream as it was expensive, but you could also have that.  I enjoy Salads so had Vegan Cheese Salad, or ham with some delicious Baconnaise Mayonnaise which was also Vegan and you can eat meat and veggies so dinners were not a problem.  I did eat brown seeded loaves from the supermarket as they didn't mention iodine, but some say you should bake your own, but that is time consuming so I didn't.  I didn't eat any dairy whatsoever, nor seafood so I think it is a payoff and if there was any iodine in the bread it wouldn't be so much. I did buy some Oat-ly milk but found that had iodine in it so didn't use it, but did enjoy Rice milk which wasn't too bad in tea/coffee, although I was glad to get back to my semi-skimmed.

Hope all goes well and I am sending this link, but I am sure you have already seen this if you have followed the diet previously but I found it very useful.

  • Thank you for taking the time to write all of this to me  I appreciate it so so much.
I’m noting all these down and will do a small food shop later tonight so thank you!! Xx

I think I get myself stressed about doing something wrong so have been subconsciously going towards the no salt/no iodine approach because of my paranoia about it all and making sure my scan in 2 weeks goes ok and I don’t ‘mess it up’. I can’t remember what I had the last time I was on the diet - it was June last year and I think I was on autopilot at the time so brain fog hit me massively. I know the no salt/no iodine approach is completely unnecessary in the UK and almost impossible to cut out completely anyway, so I think my mind is playing a few tricks on me and making it more complicated than it needs to be..

I’m finding myself missing breakfast now because I’m worried about what I’m allowed to eat. I haven’t had any shop bought bread but haven’t got round to baking my own (yet!) But you have reassured me, even if it was to contain some it is probably so low and wouldn’t make a difference for the scan.

My last blood test results showed that I have developed fatty liver over the year so I’m also trying to be careful with what I eat in that aspect too so maybe that’s contributing to me being too careful with what I am eating/drinking.

anyway there’s my ramble over! Thank you so much again and I hope you’ve been well xxx

  • You are not on your own at feeling stressed, I was too, you are so scared of getting something wrong and messing up.  I think the American sites don't help either, they have more reason to get hung up on it than we have.  I even read recently that some areas of UK don't demand you go on a LID diet at all, but I know I would rather because I want it to work.  Don't worry about rambling I can ramble on for the whole of UK lol  Hope it goes well @Pinkbluepurple I am sure you will be fine.  You can have Cereal with plant based milk btw, or toast and jam/marmalade/marmite, trying to remember what I had now, but I am not a big breakfast eater myself these days.
