What are the symptoms of thyroid cancer please?

i have had a melanoma in my eye for 2 years and am concerned that it has spread.

twice recently it is if my throat has closed over - i cannot keep anything down - even saliva comes back up.

my thyroid appeared to be swollen although the thyroid blood test only show borderline problems  there - not enough to go to thyroxine.

i was already booked for a n ultrasound on my throat and after my recent closure incident on Monday have been booked in for a tube down my throat.

the hospital say it is very unlikely that it is my thyroid causing these problems but after my eye you do tend to worry.

please dont say speak to your nurse because i do i not have one..

  • Aside from a swollen lump, it's hard to describe thyroid cancer symptoms - and something like 90% of thyroid lumps aren't actually cancer.

The thyroid is a delicate little organ and sometimes struggles if people with a different type of cancer in the head and neck area - or even some breast cancers - gets treated with radiation that strays to the neck and plays havoc. Even then, it's more likely to cause thyroid problems than actual cancer. It takes a pretty big thyroid lump to start closing your windpipe - mine was 7.5 cm diameter and I told it was pressing on the windpipe. If you don't have a really big lump - just a bit of a swelling - it's very unlikely to be causing your problems.

The docs will get to the bottom of it.

And I won't tell you to talk to your nurse because in thyroid world, we very rarely get assigned such people. I do, however think, that if you're booked for an ultrasound and a tube down your throat you are already doing everything you need to to find out what it is.

Personally, my money wouldn't be betting on thyroid cancer.

    Best wishes

    Barbara
