Hi all, ive just started with the diet and will struggle as I like my food, but remain focused stopped thyroxine and been prescribed liothyonine for 4 weeks. My nuclear medicine guy wants me on this diet for 5 weeks before my iodine treatment, I have metastatic thyroid, its in my throat voice box oesophagus and lungs. I just hope it will give me more time, I was told its incurable in my lungs.
Gosh 5 weeks is quite a long time for LID, I thought it would be 2 weeks. Sorry to hear it has spread to your voice box, oesophagus and lungs and I wish you all the best for your RAI treatment. I am hoping the diet is easy as we tend to cook most things from scratch, but it will be the snacks that I will be frustrated with but am compiling a list of things I can eat and will be doing a shop as soon as I get my date @Tomo. So apart from fruit we can eat dark chocolate that is 70% or more cacoa content, crisps (onlythose that do not contain milk I guess), vegan cheese if it doesn't contain Carrageenan, and I was thinking I could make some Vegan buns or something so no dairy involved and maybe rice pudding made with plant based milk, and could have dairy free custard or cream with fruit or something else. So I am not going to starve and hope you don't too. Stay strong and hope all goes well for you.
Hi Petal, my nuclear guy wants me on it 5 weeks, I know its long but he said studies have said its beneficial and I will do anything for time with grandkids and family. I'm positive and will enjoy my life as much as possible, he told me the cancer in my lungs is incurable but I'm enjoying life love to all xxxx
Hi petal,I’m 3 weeks in to my li diet,I’m so missing my cuppa and tried plant based milk and hate hate all of em so go without tea and coffee I got another two weeks of this diet then i have ri treatment, diet I found very challenging and dull but hey ho all for the best I guess, love to all xxx
Keep at it @Tomo, nearly there. I am pleased my LID diet is only for 2 weeks, and it starts on Wed this week, so have been buying a few bits in to make it easier. I did buy some Mylk from Heron Foods this week, which is dairy free and brags that it tastes like semi skimmed milk and was only 79p so a good price too. I am hoping it is ok, but I know I don't mind Rice or Oat milk so have a carton of each of those too, but I will miss my coffee whitener. We tend to eat meat and fresh veg a lot, don't eat many potatoes, and can eat rice/pasta, so I think I will be ok. I like salads too and will buy some Vegan Cheese and have some dairy free yogurts and some Oreos. I will miss ice cream and fish though, but 2 weeks is easier than your 5 weeks. Hope the treatment goes well, mine is on the 7 Dec. so probably around the same date as yours. Let me know how it goes.
Hi Petal, thanks for info on how you going to do your diet,I have lost 1 stone 1lb so far lol I am craving for flavour I think all food seem tasteless,I will be withdrawing liothorine ? Friday so to trick my body into producing T cell me thinks,so when I have radio iodine my body will hopefully grab all radiation to kill the cancer cells fingers crossed, good luck Petal don’t give up we gotta fight this.love to all Tomo xxx
I have lost a stone since my operation too which is good, even better if I lose a bit more, but I doubt I will. Checked my Oat Milk last night and it isn't suitable as it contains Iodine after all, didn't check when we bought it online, but never mind I have the other milks in. Bet you are looking forward to a decent cup of tea if you have been avoiding it. I have had 3 coffees and 2 teas and a hot chocolate today, storing them up before Wednesday lol
Hi Petal and Tomo
I had my RAI towards the end of October. Yes Petal before my lo iodine diet I tried Oat milk and thought that it was fine to drink instead of cows milk but it had added iodine. In the end I found Almond milk the most acceptable even on weetabix. In coffee I waited 5 minutes before adding it to my coffee and it tasted better. I had some GU desserts from the FREEFROM section that were chocolate mousses, others contained the seaweed ingredient. In the City hospital room I used the shower 3 times a day. Went in Tuesday after the Sunday and Monday visits for the injections. On the Thursday my radiation was so low that I could sleep in same bed as my wife that night. On the Thursday had full body scan and neck scans before being able to go home. Did my own washing up for about 4 days.
But yes love my morning cup of tea and a latte later in the morning. These were the things I missed the most during my lo iodine diet. I had oat biscuits as these were butter and dairy free.
Hope it goes okay.
Hi @CanaryN hope you are feeling well and had no side effects from the RAI, I am getting quite anxious as mine is on the 7 Dec. Anxious enough about the Thyrogen injections without taking the RAI pill. Getting fed up of the rice milk already, it seems to leave my teeth very chalky. Cracked open a carton of MYLK which claims to taste like semi-skimmed milk but it doesn't. Can't wait to drink coffee whitener in my coffee when it is over. Oat biscuits are something we used to buy regularly, didn't know they were ok to have, so will have to check that out, thanks for the tip. GU desserts sound tempting too.
Hi Petal,my date for radio iodine was the 5th December ,getting really fed up now,I was told due iodine shortage nation wide, was given new date 16th getting really tired ,my immune is low I got sores on my tongue and mouth full thrush my gp prescribed nystan to take care of my mouth ,I,m really struggling with diet which I have been on this low iodine diet for over 7 weeks and without thyroxine 7 was also, love to all Tomo xxx
