Hi

I am looking for some information. After my total thyroidectomy and neck dissection last week, I have my follow up appointment in 8 weeks. There is a MDT meeting next week. Will my appointment in 8 weeks be to discuss how surgery went and next steps? They said I would probably need RAI. My Health Centre also called to check my repeat prescription for Levothyroxine and Vit D tablets but they also mentioned a check up and bloods etc. Do I not need to wait until I’ve seen my consultant? Don’t imagine. Health Centre would do my bloods before I saw my consultant as they would need to wait to see if my Levothyroxine which I only started last week is working/ right dose etc. Thanks for any feedback xx

  • Another question from me. Sorry. I take my meds at 7am in the morning and usually wait an hour until I have breakfast. I do like my tea with milk. Is it ok to have this after an hour or do I need to wait longer. Still getting the hang of all this xx

  • Yes, I would expect the 8 week appointment will be to check how you are doing and to make arrangements for RAI. I'm assuming that you had already been told it was cancer - some of us don't know before surgery so 8 weeks would be a long time to wait and find out whether it was or wasn't cancer.

If you were sent home from the hospital with your first month's thyroxine, then it's great that the surgery are making sure your repeat prescription is in hand. Blood test? Hmm, as you say, the thyroxine won't be anywhere near stable but they might want to check your calcium is OK. It would be good if they did your blood test in 6 weeks time so you can take the results to your appointment.

    Best wishes

  • The 'official' line on time between T4 and food is usually 30 minutes but lots of us (me included) like to aim for an hour. It's a personal choice.
You need to avoid hot drinks during that period but there's no issue at all about having milk in your tea after an hour.
