Low iodine diet

Ok guys, so sounds like my RAI treatment may be going ahead after being postponed twice (due to the shortage), since I haven't heard otherwise yet. I have now started my two week LID and just wondering how to manoeuvre around it. What else, except for milk, eggs, iodine and red dye I should be looking out for on labels? E.g. can I have vegan cheese? Or milk and egg free chocolate? Basically, providing that none of the above are listed in the ingredients, I'm ok to have? Is sliced toastie bread ok? ( The leaflet I got said 'fresh bread' but I'm not sure entirely what it means)

Thanks!

  • Where are you having your treatment and which country are you in? The guidance can vary a lot.
You don't mention fish, seafood, or iodised salt - those are usually the main ones to watch out for.

  • Hi, ah yes I forgot to mention those (seafood). I'm in the UK so iodised salt isn't an issue, right?

  • I think any iodised salt has to be labelled as such so it should be OK.

In the USA, there's a lot of iodine in unexpected places - for example they use iodate dough conditioners in bread that make it unsuitable for LID and wash salad leaves in iodine or similar.

But, in the UK, we're much less wedded to adding iodine to things.

Unless you are a vegan, I'd say avoid vegan cheese. Given the choice of vegan cheese or no cheese, I'd just go without for a couple of weeks.

  • I noticed that they all se to contain carrageenan (vegan cheese that is).
