Hi can anyone share a similar experiences?  I’m 54 and have had an under active thyroid for 30 years.  I’ve just had a test come back with elevated TPO antibodies which I’m told suggests Hashimotos.  I also though have had a cough and sore throat for the last 6 weeks or more.  Chest X-ray clear.  When i google (and i know i shouldn’t) I’m now worried this is thyroid cancer.  Any reassurance or similar experiences?  I don’t see any lumps.

  • Hello
Thyroid problems are very common but thyroid cancers are rare and for many of us in this group, we had no thyroid issues before the cancer came along.
TPO? Not something we tend to know about. But I found on the Mayo Clinic website:

"The presence of TPO antibodies in your blood suggests that the cause of thyroid disease is an autoimmune disorder, such as Hashimoto's disease or Graves' disease. In autoimmune disorders, your immune system makes antibodies that mistakenly attack normal tissue."

Seems to me that this is something you need to take up with your doctors. Any cough that doesn't go away after a couple of months should be checked out by your doctor, just in case, but it's not a typical symptom of thyroid cancer.

Please tell your doctor what's on your mind. I'm sure they'll either reassure you or arrange some tests but with no apparent lumps, they might send you for an ultrasound but it's hard to see what else they might do.

    Best wishes

Thank you so much for your fast reply.  Take care

  • The internet is stuffed to bursting with groups about Hashimotos and a host of autoimmune conditions that I know almost nothing about. We live in an age where it has never been easier to find people who have opinions about our lumps and bumps.

You're always welcome here but I hope that you won't need us for help on thyroid cancer, but I also know that in terms of its impact on your life, a chronic thyroid condition can be every bit as debilitating and life-changing as a brush with thyroid cancer. So I hope whatever the doctors find will not be too worrying for you.

    Best wishes
