Couple of LID questions for those who have done it before:
- What widely available milk substitute would you recommend? I'm trying to be as thorough as possible to avoid any iodine but different sources seem to suggest that oat milk and soya milk are both inappropriate for the LID.
- I can't find anything online about whether sweets are permitted? I'm a bit of a sweet tooth so was hoping to replace the milk/white chocolate I eat fairly often with wine gums and/or starburst. Can someone advise on this?

Most nut milks are calcium enriched so do not work. I moved to soft drinks for 10 days. On the sweets front you must avoid any that use a red dye as that usually contains iodine. Low IOD diet is often referred to as a bland diet but not all bad news as I losr 3kg in 10 days. It really is worth the effort as it makes your treatment more effective. If I remember correctly, one of the problems with the milk substitutes is that many contain salt and it's not clear if it's iodised. Calcium shouldn't be an issue. In fact I ate lots of sesame snaps during LID because I wasn't getting calcium anywhere else - sesame seeds are the vegan calcium-hunters friend.
When I did LID, I allowed myself a splash of milk in my first coffee of the day and then drank black coffee or herbal teas the rest of the day. I also find if I have coffee in a coffee bar takeaway cup, if I can't SEE it's black, it doesn't taste so black - if you see what I mean.
Most sweets should be fine. I also ate high cocoa content Lindt black chocolate. You can also drink yourself silly if you're so inclined - though obviously I wouldn't recommend that. LID 'rules' are much relaxed compared to when I did it 9-10 years ago. Just try to stay away from American websites and LID cookbooks which are based on much stricter rules (due to the US having ****ed up its food supply chain in all sorts of dysfunctional ways that aren't typical in the UK). I think the Buttefly Thyroid Cancer website probably have good guidelines on their website.
