Night sweats

So i had my Hemi on october 8th and then had the rest removed december 16th. All went went (awaiting bloods and followup next week).

However since the total thyroidectomy I've noticed I'm having night sweats, I'm only a petite person and generally dont sweat that much at all day to day but I am waking up wet through to the point that ny hair is wet.

Is this normal? Could this be a side effect? Of the surgery or the levothyroxine?

Thanks, Gaynor xx

    Hi Gaynor

This isn’t normal but the result of the levothyroxine dose being incorrect. I had this last year, with terrible nights sweats and a racing heart. My dosage was reduced 4 days a week and the side effects disappeared very quickly.

When you meet with your consultant it is worth mentioning this. I hope you get your dosage reduced next week.

    Hi Gaynor,

I had a total thyroidectomy in October 2018. I haven’t experienced night sweats but I do get regularly very cold and hot.

My my consultant did say that being on thyroxine can make you more sensitive to the heat/cold.

Definitely mention it to your consultant as Runner said.

  • Hey there

As Runner has mentioned, it could very well be down to the thyroxine dose not quite being right for you. The good thing is that you should have had your bloods done this week sometime, so within the next two weeks you'll hopefully hear back about the results of those.

I just wondered too, could I ask what age you are? Please feel free not to answer if you aren't comfortable revealing that. I ask, because I'm just wondering if there's a possibility that you might be menopausal?

  • Hi , I've just turned 34 in december (the day after my surgery). Only had my fourth child 8 months ago and my menstrual cycle is pretty spot on so I dont think it's that.

  • Lol, no, def doesn't sound like it's the menopause!

However with giving birth 8 months ago, and the hormonal upset caused with a thyroid removal, it could be that your body is just going 'wtf?!' and is a mess of confusion at the moment.

Fingers crossed though that the bloods show the cause and it can be fixed!
