Hi all, hope everyone is doing well? I’ve popped in as I am extremely anxious about a new lymph node that has appeared in my neck just behind and slightly below my ear. It’s been there for about 2 1/2 months and it was scanned about 2 months ago as part of the ION trial that I’m on. I was randomised to the no treatment arm just close follow up. Anyway went to hospital for bld results on Thursday and ENT surgeon had a feel of my neck and has now organised a fast track U/S scan which I have this Thursday. The whole thing is freaking me out. My thyroid cancer was an incidental finding as I had thyroid removed due to a large goitre (inconclusive biopsy report Dr’s really didn’t think it was cancerous)) so I am worried that nothing was really investigated when I had surgery and something has been missed, my tumour was only 1.8 cm on the right side (the same side as the lymph node. TG level is below 1 but I have TGab (low at 1.5). Has anyone else had similar to this, should I be thinking the worse and how the hell do I stop myself googling I’m turning into a mad woman!! I realise lots are going through much more so I apologise if this seems rather trivial but I can’t help worrying.
Heya bbosh,
So, just wondering, did the first ultrasound confirm it was def a lymph node? Did they say it looked suspicious? Has it grown at all in those 2 months?
If they didn't confirm it was a lymph node, it could be something as simple as a lipoma, especially as your TG levels are under 1. I've got one just behind and below my left ear. Your antibody levels are negligible at that level, so nothing to be worried about.
Hope that helps, feel free to ask any followups you like!

Hi Lass,
how are you? And thank you for your reply.
When i had the scan 2 months ago I pointed out this tiny lump to the radiographer which he then scanned and said it’s just a lymph node but didn’t say anymore than that! Yes it has grown quite a bit in the last 2 months from a tiny lump to now the size of a large pea. I also have a tiny one on the other side of my neck slightly lower down and the only reason I have found them is because they ache from time to time.
i know I’m just going to have to wait till Thursday but it’s so nice coming here and knowing others are going through a similar thing and understand how one little upset can send you crazy!!
Heya,
I'm still alive, mostly. Lol. Lots of health issues here, it's a wee bitty mad. All on my profile if you've got an hour or so to spare. Lol
So, the thing is, cancer or no cancer the thyroidectomy would have happened the same way. So they removed as much as they could not knowing there was cancer, and nothing would have been different with the op had they known there was cancer. So nothing was missed there.
Then, it was only after your cancer diagnosis that you were placed on the ION trial. So they knew there was cancer, they knew what the lump looked like, they knew what cells it contained and everything was seen as safe and well to put you on the ION trial. So here again, nothing was missed.
Unfortunately, all it takes is one rogue cell to turn nasty and multiply to get a recurrence, which is why thyroid cancer patients are monitored for life, where other cancer patients are usually given the all clear at some point and sent on their way.
So at your scan, see if they will scan both lumps that you've found. And hopefully the consultant has authorised an FNA if the tech thinks it's needed, so you don't have to return. But above that, hopefully it turns out to be nothing at all.
But either way, yes, we know what you're going through, and you're def not a crazy person. Well... Not in relation to this anyway! Lol
