Hello all

I'm in the process of buying a house and need to buy life insurance. I know this will be tricky as my diagnosis and  treatment is recent. Does anyone know of companies to start looking at?

Drew

  • Heya Drew,

You don't actually need life insurance to buy a house these days. It's recommended, but it isn't a must have as it used to be.

From what I've seen of life insurance when I did a quick look around for myself a couple of years ago, no-one would touch me with a barge pole.

I'd suggest probably calling the Macmillan helpline though, as they'll probably have a resource with suggestions of companies to try.

Good luck and happy house hunting!

That's really a good decision to take.

  • My husband took out insurance on himself after I had cancer and was told that most companies wouldn't touch anybody with cancer (at least not without prohibitively high premiums) until they were five years clear.

I didn't know what Lass has said above about not needing life insurance to buy a house - but then I wasn't aware you needed it in the past either. These days people seem to need pretty hefty deposits so the risk to lenders is much reduced compared to the days of 100% (or more) lending.

    Best wishes

    Hi Drew

You don't need life insurance to buy a house, I was nearly completing on a mortgage and they checked for me at the time, the company said no. That wouldn't have stopped me, I was starting to look into more basic cover, like say you broke a leg or something. Payment protection I think it was. I pulled out of the house I was buying due to the awful report, was a lucky escape as I came to discover a year later. There was no issue getting a mortgage!

If you speak with a financial adviser, they will be able to provide options.

Enjoy house hunting, I am still at it.

    Take care
