Hello all...new here...just had a hemithyroidectomy...left without discharge papers..they being posted. So I am unsure of what to expect.

I have my stitches out on Friday...but I am experiencing nausea and the sweats are incredible...I had early menopause and that was nothing compared to this. I have outpatients app in 5-6weeks but have endocrinologist app on 4th july.  I feel a little in limbo as I do not know what is happening to me and nobody around to talk to.

  • Hey there Swithin,

Welcome to the forum, though I'm sorry you need to be here.

When you say you've just had a hemi, are you talking today or last week sometime?

Also, how does your incision look? Is it swollen, red, and wet looking?

    Hi Lass

Last Wednesday I still have it all covered  the nurse said to leave it on...it feels ok. I have no fever. I suppose it's a waiting game to hear from whomever again.

  • Heya,

To be honest, I think I'd say get yourself to your GP today. If they've no appointments, go to a walk in centre.

There's every chance that the nausea and sweating are just the anaesthetic leaving your body. But there's also every chance that it is the beginning of an infection. And not all infections come with a temperature. So def better safe than sorry by getting it double checked imo, because it's not a side effect that normally happens after a hemi.

Keep in touch though and let us know how you go.

    Hi Lass

Redness around scarring and in throat...to be expected. No temperature. Seems I am reacting to the pain...body cant cope so have been given morphine to help out. I shall only take it at night to help me sleep...which I have not been as dont know where to put myself.

Thanks for advice...I feel better now....asked about walk in clinics...my nearest one is an hour away...the Joy's of the countryside lol xx

  • Heya,

Very glad a reason was found for it, and they've given you something to help. Hopefully a good night's sleep will work wonders for you!

BTW, have you built a slope in your bed to sleep on? Lying flat with just a pillow or two just doesn't work after a hemi or a total. What you want, is a slope to lie on, bit like you're in a recliner. So find some spare pillows, extra duvets, even towels, to build a slope and you'll be astounded at the difference.

Also, when you sit down, are you supporting your head on something? You do need to so that your neck has a chance to relax and chill out, recover and heal from the op.

Oh and with the morphine, don't be surprised if you get a REALLY itchy tip of the nose. It's an odd side effect, but quite a common one. You do end up looking like you're desperate for your next fix of cocaine sometimes, but needs must. Lol
