Hi

I have had bloods taken 6 weeks after a total Thyroidectomy. I was wondering if someone could help interpret them.

The only result I got was TSH which is 8. My consultant has increased my thyroxine to 125mg.

i have noticed that my heart rate is dropping which would suggest I am under active at the moment.

Thanks

  • Hey there Runner,

Make sure you note when you start taking the new dose, then set a note in your calendar for 8 weeks time, telling you to organise a blood test for that week. That will check and see where your new dose has put your levels.

Now, regarding your TSH, they usually want it around 0.1 for at least the first year after diagnosis. So with yours at 8, it's much too high which is why they've increased your dose. Because as your T4 goes up, your TSH goes down.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi Lass

Thank you for your reply. I will keep a note of my blood results. I am hoping my increased dose will give me more energy.

    Thanks Runner x

  • Heya,

See if you can get your T4 and TG numbers too, and keep track of them as well.

All three of those are important, and the T4 and TSH are the ones that determine dose and how you feel.

Fingers crossed you'll notice a difference in a couple of months time. Shout if you need anything!

    Hi

i started taking my higher does of levothyroxine 6 days ago and am exhausted, feeling worse rather than better. . How long does it take before you notice an increase in energy with a change of dose? I am going to bed earlier and earlier!

I saw my surgeon 4 weeks ago and he advised strongly that I have RAI therapy. He has passed me over to nuclear medicine and I am still waiting for an appointment. Is this normal?

    Many thanks for help.

  • Heya Runner,

6 - 8 weeks before your dose change balances and stabilises. So at least 4 weeks until you'll notice any sort of difference if you're going to.

What was your TSH and T4, and what dose increase did they make? Because if you were well out, and the change was minimal, then you may not notice a change and may need it changed again.

And I'd call nuclear medicine just to make sure they have your referral.

    Hi Lass

Thank you for your reply. I don’t have my other results as my consultant didn’t tell me. I was on 100mg before and it has been increased to 125mg. The bloods  were taken 5 weeks after my TT but didn’t get a change until 3 weeks after these were taken. I guess I must just learn to be patient.

I have given nuclear medicine a call, so hopefully someone will call back. I am not desperate to start the treatment I just want to know when it is, so I can plan things for the next few months.

i have just had a wee look at your profile. I hope things improve for you soon and you start to get some answers. I really appreciate the advice you give on this forum.

    Thanks

  • Lol. Looking at my profile is never a wee look. It's turning into a bloomin odyssey. ;)

Hmmmm, so an increase of 25 when you were at a TSH of 8. As a heads up, don't be surprised if you need to go up to 150, or 125/150 alternating. I don't think that last increase will have been enough to get you to suppression level. However it should still help with energy levels further down the line.

And yes, you need to plan so you need a date. You'll have 2 weeks of LID, then a week ish in hospital. So if you've got kids or pets then you need to sort out care for that week, and shopping for the 2 weeks of LID. And any employer will always appreciate a good heads up as to any time you need off. So I get it, there are practicalities you'd like to get sorted sooner rather than later. So fingers crossed the referral has gone through and you're on the waiting list.

Fingers are crossed everything picks up for you!
