I was lucky in that my pathology on my nodule came back as benign after having a hemi in March this year. However I had a blood test after about 7 weeks and it showed my TSH levels higher than the range (6) top of range was 4.5 and I did have symptoms of underactive thyroid - I feel like I have permanent Jetlag and feel quite low and have no energy. GP was good and has prescribed me Levothyroxine starting at 50mg daily which seems reasonable. he told me to take it in the morning and not eat or drink or about an hour afterwards which is fine. However I have read somewhere else that I should take dairy or fortified milk until after 4 hours due to the calcium content in milk. This now puts me in a dilemma as I won't be able to have my usual cereal breakfast. I don't eat diary milk but like coconut milk which is fortified with Calcium (Tri-Calcium Phosphate). Does anyone know if this is correct or is it just calcium in tablet form that should be taken after 4 hours and that foods like milk containing calcium does affect the absorbsion of Levo. Thanks
Hello again,
After an hour then eating dairy, or any of the alternatives, is absolutely fine. So a bowl of cereal, or a milky drink, or a yoghurt is all good. The calcium content in foods isn't high enough to give absorption issues.
Koko has 120mg of calcium per 100ml. While a calcium tablet has anywhere from 400mg to 1000mg in my quick Googling. So that's a big difference in the quantity being taken in, and I'd hazard that the chemical composition of the two is different as well.
But anyways, breakfast cereal with a milk style product an hour after taking your thyroxine is absolutely fine. So enjoy!

Hey cancertwice,
I had a double diagnosis of stage 2 PTC and Hodgkins Lymohoma in November 2017. I had a total thyroidectomy and lymph node dissection in December 2017. I’ve been on Levothyroxine since then (150mcg per day) and I’m vegan. So I don’t have any dairy at all. I‘ve had no problems at all with calcium and don’t take any supplements. I think calcium is only a problem if you have had your parathyroid glands removed? You should be fine to eat what you normally eat, just wait 60 mins after taking your Levothyroxine otherwise you reduce the efficacy of the tablets. All the best!
