Hello Everyone,
I recently got diagnosed with stage 4 thyroid cancer, had total thyroid removal plus lymphnodes & neck muscles. I am going to City Hosp. Belfast on tuesday for my pre RAI appointment, I feel quite anxious about the whole thing. I know they will put me on the low iodine diet etc. Can anyone tell me what the RAI is like? Can you bring your own things, how long will you have to stay in the hospital, what happens when you leave and are there any side effects? Will I be able to hug my children & husband when I return home? As I live in L'Derry can I have follow up scans done there or do I have to go back to Belfast?
I would appreciate any input any of you may have.
Thank you
Maddie
Hi Maddie
Don't stress too much. I am from Carrickfergus and had my RAI there nearly 7 years ago now. I am sure things are pretty much the same. We now have a thyroid nurse specialist, have you got speaking to her? She is very nice indeed and a nurse from nuclear meds will also speak with you and again she is just great to talk to.
I was in on a Friday and out by the Monday and was only restricted for a week. Scan wise I think it has to be done at the Cancer Centre in Belfast, as that is where all RAI is given, as you are given a very very small dose for the followup scan.
You can bring your own things in. I brought a laptop, but at that time, no one sorted the wifi code, but now I think wifi is available easily enough at the City. There was a fridge, so you can bring in some nice juices, sweets etc. I believe the room has been decorated by the Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust, so it should be nice. There is a balcony you can go out unto, views of the Lisburn Road are so interesting lol.
It will depend when you go in, usually the stay is a few days and it was just the full weekend for me, cause no one was able to take any readings, so I have to wait until the nuclear team were back in on the Monday. As my levels on the Monday were so so low.
I will send you a friend request if you want to ask anything else pacific to Belfast.
Take care
Lolabean :)
I was just coming to say 'Lolabean is the one you want' and she got here before me.
is our NI expert. She'll be able to tell you lots and if she doesn't know herself, she will find somebody who does. You came to the right place.
Best wishes
Barbara

Hello Lolabean,
Thank you so much for taking the trouble to reply. I have my appointment this afternoon in City Hospital and should be given a date. You really set my mind at rest and I very much appreciate that.
Thankyou again
