Hi, new on here. In Feb I had a partial thyroidectomy. Went back for results around 5-6 weeks ago. Diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Had to go for scan and biopsy. Ended up having 2 biopsies as I have had a lump in my neck since November. Doctor said they both look abnormal and advised to having right side of thyroid removed. Have an appointment on Monday for results etc. I am feeling a little anxious although I haven't told my husband and daughter. I feel more worried about them than myself. I just want to know what it is in my thyroid and neck and move on with treatment. My thyroid levels are low but not on any treatment as yet, consultant wants to get all results back before he decides what to do. It's been a strange couple of months. Just thought I would share my thoughts.

  • Hello and welcome.

Is there anything you want to ask us?

    Best wishes

Hi. To be honest I am not sure. I will know more tomorrow after the hospital appt. I was advised to have a list of questions at the ready, as when we were told the results the surgeon was still tapping away at his computer whilst telling me it was cancer. I was so shocked I didn't say a thing. I had waited 5 weeks for the appt for results, so felt sure it wouldn't be anything bad as everybody said if it was anything I would have heard sooner. Thank you. No doubt I will start asking soon.

  • Unfortunately, some doctors are a bit TOO relaxed about thyroid cancer. They know, based on their experience, that we're most likely to be absolutely fine but we don't have that experience and - not surprisingly - we feel like the bottom just dropped out of our world whilst they tap away and contemplate what to have for dinner or where they parked their car.

I'd suggest you have a bit of a read around and get a sense for what people normally want to talk about. You'll get some ideas of what to ask your surgeon but feel free to ask us anything - doesn't matter if it's been asked a 1000 times before, we won't get peeved.

    Best wishes

  • Just wondering how you got on yesterday?

    Hope you're ok.

How lovely of you to message. Biopsies were inconclusive, scans showed abnormalities. I will have to wait until I get the results of op to find out exactly what the problem is.. Right side of thyroid needs to be removed. I am having to stay in for a day or two to monitor my calcium level. I have to have a CT scan on my chest but I think that's just as a precaution. I will be started on Thyroxine immediately after surgery. Looking forward to that as it's been hard going for about 9-10 months. How's you?

  • Sounds like you've got an excellent, and normal, plan in place. And yes, the CT scan is standard in some hospitals, just helps them to see what they might find once they open you up and also so they know better what it is they're going to be removing.

Good luck with the op, though I'm sure you'll be absolutely fine!

As for me, getting by as usual. Slight smile
