10 month tests

Hi everyone, I hope you’re all doing well, I check in most days but I rarely respond to anything as there are so many others who are able to advise better than I can!

Ive been doing well since RAI last May. I had blood tests in December and the tg was less than 0.1 so termed undetectable. Ive had other bloods done since then and I’ve not heard anything so I’m assuming they were okay.I’ve been for a ultrasound today, I’m told everything in terms of lymph nodes looks clear but there is something (7mm slightly brighter spot with no blood supply) on my thyroid bed that doesn’t look suspicious but it will have to be mentioned to my consultant as they’ve seen it. Fatty tissue or scar tissue was mentioned, had anyone had this happen?

  • Hey Fi,

Sorry your post wasn't responded too before now!

Sounds like all of your numbers are doing really well! Who did your last set of bloods? Might be worth calling and asking for the results to make sure they were done, and also just for your own records.

I've never actually had a 9 - 12 month check, so no ultrasound since the first one to diagnose my lump. However I've seen lots of people getting results like yours where they see scar or fatty tissue on the US. The good thing is that your TG is undetectable, so that means it is highly unlikely that it's thyroid tissue or thyroid cancer. Otherwise they'd expect your TG to have risen.

So I'd not be concerned about it at all. They're just sitting the is and crossing the TS is all.

  • Hi Lass, thanks for your reply. I’ve got myself all worked up, I think it’s partly because of the way I found out, I’d gone for the ultrasound on my own as I’d not expected to get any results on the day. We went from ‘there is a little spot that I don’t think is anything to worry about’ to ‘I’ll have to put it in the report cause I’ve seen it, I don’t know what it is we’ll need to check the blood results’ to her parting comments which were ‘if you’re going to have cancer, thyroid cancer is the best one to have’!!!

I last had blood tests at hospital at the beginning of March and I’ve not heard anything since so I’m hoping all is well :) x

  • Thanks Lass :)

I was feeling fine but since the ultrasound I’ve been feeling so much more conscious of my neck. It’s not exactly painful but feels swollen, a bit uncomfortable, like somebody has been kneeling on it, and my ears have been popping. I feel exhausted and my chest is also hurting. I don’t suppose anyone had had anything similar after an ultrasound? I’m inclined to think it’s all in my head but I’ve been reasonably okay at keeping all of that in check so far so I don’t know why I’m struggling so much now. Xx

  • Hey Fi,

I'm inclined to think two things....

One, you are subconsciously stressing about whatever is in your neck. So you're much more aware of every little twinge, which is then feeding into that worry because you've felt a twinge.

Two, you've got a cold type bug coming on. Swollen glands, feels harder to swallow, popping ears, tightness in the chest, and tiredness. Those are all cold/flu type symptoms, which can be made worse by stress - especially when you're on hyper alert around that area.

So I'd up your vitamin C by having a glass of orange juice in the morning, keep yourself warm and dry, then chase up your blood test results from before to check those were all ok. Also, if you've not heard back about the ultrasound results by Wed lunch, I'd call your consultants secretary or your specialist nurse just to ask what's happening with the results and you just wondered when you might get them back.

But an ultrasound isn't going to make you feel anything like you're describing. It's non invasive and just takes, rubbish, pictures. So that would def mean it's something else and a bug seems the most likely cause in my uneducated opinion. Lol.

Hope you feel better and get your results back soon!!

  • Hi Lass, just letting you know, I saw the consultant today. My thyroglobulin is still undetectable but they wish to follow up the ultrasound with more blood tests in three months and another ultrasound in six months just to check that what they’ve seen on the ultrasound definitely is scar tissue and nothing else. He was as reassuring as he could have been so just a case of wait and see I guess. Xx

  • Hey Fi,

That's good news! I do like a Dr who double checks and doesn't just make a proclamation then leaves it there.

You can join me on my waiting couch, as I've to have more bloods done in 3 - 6 months time to double check something too. I'll bring cake, you bring refreshments, and the time will fly by!
