High TSH between hemi and completion

Hi All,

I had the pre op today for my completion, no date set yet for that. I was told that the thyroid function test I had last week showed my TSH is a bit high at 28. The other results were all in the normal range though. The nurse seemed concerned that this needs sorting, could delay surgery and is checking with the consultant. Has anyone else had this? I'd imagine it must be quite common after a hemi to get a high TSH to push the remaining bit of thyroid to work?

I've also established since I last posted that the completion is happening because the cancer was multi focal.

All the best to you all.

Cheers, L

  • Hi

It's not unusual for the TSH to go up between hemi and completion if your remaining half thyroid just can't pick up the slack. That said, 28 is not really 'a bit high' - it's properly high. I can't really understand why that would stop them going ahead with surgery though.

Was it definitely TSH? Could it have been FT4? If that was that high and you weren't on medication, it might mean your heart was working too hard and might be a cause for them to worry about surgery.

Multifocal - yep, that makes sense to get shot of the rest of the thyroid.

I hope you get your date soon.

    Best wishes

    Thanks Barbara.

Makes sense. Yes it was definitely TSH. Hopefully that will get sorted quickly then if it's classed as high. I'm not on any medication yet.

Good to know from your perspective that it shouldn't be a reason to delay things.

    Many thanks again, L

  • The TSH being high is both understandable and temporary. Once they get you on the thyroxine, it'll come right down again.  If there's a problem with it being high, it shouldn't be hard to bring it down with some thyroxine.

Please let us know what happens next!

    Best wishes

Thanks again. I've now heard back that the consultant took the view that it would be better to get me into surgery sooner and then start thyroxine, so no delay. In fact I'll be having the completion done next Wednesday now as there was a cancellation slot available.

    Hurray (I think).

  • You all sorted and ready for Wed Grimalkin?

Well Lass, I've got the following lined up for when I come out:

    Big v pillow

    Sweeties

Half a ton of various painkillers

And several ancient cats taking it in turns to have the squits

So I think that's me sorted thanks!

Yes thanks Lass, all the advice here has been very helpful!

I'm back at work now, boo hiss. Still rather tired but otherwise good compared to after the first side. I've been told I'll be having RAI, so waiting on that now. When my local hospital sent the first hemi histology to the Christie for double checking they found more naughties than had originally been identified. Hey ho. The second half is still being looked at.

The cats have been v therapeutic, despite their bowel issues Grinning
