Partial thyroid removal not enough

Three weeks ago I had a partial thyroid removal operation which I was told had gone well. Yesterday I was told cancer was present in the removed thyroid and i will need to have the other side removed as well as Iodine treatment three months later. I am finding it hard to understand why it was not all removed during the first procedure.

  • Hi the reason for this is because it is so very difficult to get to and the sample side taken takes about two weeks to make sure wether cancer or not mine was not, and you will have to take thyroxine all the time hope this helps

  • I have been through the same thing - half was removed in July and the second half in September.

If the initial lump in my thyroid had not been cancer I would rather have kept the good half Slight smile

  • I agree I was doing okay with the one half. I had hoped partial removal would be enough. Not looking forward to going through it again but... I have got to have Radiation Iodine treatment a few months after the thyroid has been removed completely.

    Will be going on Levothyroxine.

  • It's very hard to conclusively diagnose some variants of thyroid cancer from a small needle sample. This is why a 'diagnostic' hemi-thyroidectomy is typically done.

Either the tissue shows cancer is present - leading somtimes to further surgery to take the rest of the thyroid - or it comes back clear and you still have a chunk of thyroid to carry on doing it's magic for decades to come.

If the doctors whipped out every suspicious looking thyroid, there would be many more people going through the rest of their lives unnecessarily thyroidless.

    Best wishes
