Waiting for radio iodine treatment

Hi all,

I am just wondering if anyone would kindly share their radio iodine experience with me? I have a low/ medium dose beginning of July and have been told I’ll need to stay in hospital for 1/2 days then return to isolate at home. I’m scared about having neck swelling and salivary gland swelling when on my own?! I am fixated on the side effects and trying to think positive as I know I can get through this. It might sound silly, but my anxious brain isn’t doing great right now. I just want to feel that I’m not alone.

  • Hello

i have had the treatment twice.  I was given the capsule on a Monday and left hospital on the Wednesday. I made sure I had a drink on the go during waking hours and took my own food as the hospital food isn’t great, especially when you feel perfectly fine.
I also took sugar-free boiled sweets and chewing gum to try to prevent issues with my salivary glands.
I can honestly say it was totally fine both times.  Boredom is the main issue!
    Try not to worry

  • Hi!

Thanks for sharing! I’m just worried about side effects but it seems they aren’t serious. Did you have low/medium/high doses?

  • The first was a 3.something ,  the second 5.something. I think I’ve had the highest dose .  It was nothing compared with other cancer treatments.  We just have to roll with it.
My husband died 6 months ago of a rare bowel cancer so my own cancer is nothing by comparison.  Mine is high risk - tall cell - and I’ve had a dodgy scan and speaking to my oncologist on Wednesday.  Feeling pretty resigned to whatever happens.

Try not to worry, it’s really fine.

  • Thank you for your response and reassurance. I’m meeting with the nuclear medicine team on the 12th July to discuss the dose and plan etc.

I’m so sorry to hear that. I hope you are doing okay and have a good support network around you. I have my fingers crossed for you for Wednesday.
