Hello, does anyone takes alfacalcidol (hydroxycholecalciferol) for vit d and calcium after thyroid surgery and if so for how long ? Thanks
Hi Brina and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I did a search for previous posts which mention alfacalcidol and found these posts for you to look through.
While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment to date into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
I didn't have to take these but it's not unusual for people to do so if their parathyroid glands are all removed of are damaged.
How long? That comes down to whether the parathyroids recover. If they are all gone, this may be a lifelong thing. If they were just damaged, they may bounce back and you can be weaned off the Ca and Vit D.
That said, even if you don't need Ca after a while, vitamin D is a good thing to take as there seems to be some correlation between getting TC and having very low vit D.
Best wishes
Barbara
