Hello,
I was diagnosed in early January with Follicular Variant Papillary Thyroid Cancer after a hemithyroidectomy, at the time the Consultant said my case wasn't straight forward. Fast forward to today, I am still waiting to have the rest of my thyroid removed but it is being delayed due to the Pathology reports, 3 separate pathologists have looked at it and 2 agree I also possibly have Medullary TC... as the operations are slightly different I am waiting for further tests to be done to give more information. The wait is a bit stressful as I don't know properly which cancer I have, Has anyone else had complications with diagnosis or been diagnosed with 2 cancers at the same time?
Hi Leaksmith, sorry to hear you're having to wait such a long time for your treatment path. That's very stressful. Your case sounds quite complicated with several different thyroid cancer variants in the picture. I know my team needed to wait until they'd got everything up together before my op for Medullary TC because the surgery has to be more complete, as you'll know it doesn't respond to RAI.
I don't have the other variants but TrinityTrace springs to mind who I think has mentioned having similar to you and who is quite an active member on here, hopefully now I've mentioned her she'll be able to reply to you soon. Take care and let us know how you get on x
Hey Leaksmith
K9crazy is right I have Follicular Variant Papillary thyroid carcinoma however the only different variants was when they were taking my FNAC's as they both came back different but as I had graves disease we decided to go straight for full thyroidectomy and to biopsy the thyroid itself which came back after 7 weeks as Follicular Variant Papillary thyroid carcinoma.
I've done quite a bit of reading and follicular variants seem to be harder to diagnose as cells are similar to other cells.
I can imagine how hard it is for you as I'm still on my journey, just had Radioiodine treatment and my scan on the 23rd and the thought of waiting until April 10th to see oncologist for results is both frustrating and annoying.
This for me has been going on since November 2022 so I feel you, hopefully your medical team are just making sure they take the next steps right to give you the best outcome, have you been assigned a thyroid specialist nurse to contact? Mine was quite good, maybe you should give them a ring to express you need some reassurance.
Big hugs I know this is such a horrible time with cancer being thrown at you and then having to wait so long it's awful x
Thank you and K9crazy for replying. I received an email today to say the pathology report is being finalised and I should know more information early next week. I will feel better once I know for definite which cancer I have whether it is FVPTC or Medullary or both, until you know you can't wrap your head around it. Like you say I think the FV does muddy the water.
I wish you all the best for your results on 10th April, that feels like a long time away but hopefully it will come quickly and with good news. xx
Aww I'm glad you have received some news, I wish you the best of luck, let us know how you get on x
I know tbh even knowing I still can't get my head around the fact I have cancer or had cancer or whatever lol
Aww Leaksmith, big hugs, well at least you know, good luck with the op and the RAI treatment, let us know how you get on x
