Hi everyone,

Just had completion done and I had a couple of questions. With no thyroid did you find it more painful to swallow/breathe in deep etc? And I'm finding my drain has much more than after my Hemi. I know that must be a good thing out than in but looking for thoughts as it'll be some time probably before they do rounds!

Straight after I was feeling it wasn't as bad but I guess the anaesthetic can wear off! I also had a moment of tearing up which I didn't know if that was related to lack of thyroid as I haven't had thyroxine quite yet!

  • I don’t have any answers but I’m booked in for my completion on Monday.  My emotions have been up and down since the C diagnosis and I am quite nervous even though the first operation went very well. I hope you get some answers today. Thinking of you . Maria

  • Thank you! Good luck for yours, I'll update of the doctors thoughts.

  • I felt better after doctor came round, they said they'll keep me till draining isn't as much and check my calcium levels. So an extra night. But I can say I've learnt to say what's different with the way I feel even if they think it's expected.

  • Thanks for the update. I didn’t have a drain last time. I’m a nurse and hate being in hospital. I’m very vocal when speaking for my patients but not good at speaking up for myself!  That’s good advice. Wishing you well

  • Hey,

When I had mine done I didn't need a drain but my throat was sore to swallow, breathing was fine but I could eat well still.

I felt more energised after mine but very sleepy for a few days. I had Levothyroxine that same night.

  • Thanks! I started thyroxine the next morning and yes currently having episodes of tiredness. My parathyroids were in shock I think but managed with calcium supplements. Drain has finally come out! So hopefully all good.

  • I had mine done in September felt great after but tiredness became more often again after a few weeks with episodes of insomnia even with taking 50mg amitriptyline on a night.

I'm hoping after this RIA I will start and feel more normal Fingers crossed

Aww that's good news, have a great recovery and enjoy the rest while you can x

  • Ah did the other side turn out malignant? We will see about mine, they suspected benign as other was minimally invasive

  • I had X2 suspicious FNA's one Thy3a and the second a Thy3F.

So as I was diagnosed with Graves disease they opted for full removal and to biopsy afterwards which eventually came back follicular variant Papillary thyroid carcinoma with positive margin and lymphovascular space invasion.

About to have RIA on the 14th Feb Valentine's day haha least I'll have food in bed eyyy lol

  • Just had my completion this morning, so far so good! Been told I will have calcium supplements whatever my blood results as they expect it to drop and RAI in a few months.  Thank you for your posts they have helped x
