After being told by my GP multiple times that I am OK because my blood test results were normal I finally gave up and referred myself to a private ENT consultant. I have been feeling generally unwell for about 4 months now. I have some obvious neck changes which I can verify with photo's over the last 12 months. I had a MRI of my head a neck which found 28mm nodule on my Thyroid. Yesterday I had an ultrasound and a biopsy but it will take a few days before I get my results.
Now I have been doing some reading up on the Thyroid and conditions which can effect it. I had a normal TSH from my GP and paid for a private Free T3 and T4 test which also came back normal. I also had a test for Thyroid antibodies which came back normal. I suppose that is good news but it does rather narrow the possible causes.
Now onto my main question which relates to the other symptoms which I have had which may or may not be related. The most painful symptom was a ache under my jaw, initially at the front but recently moved to each side. I could not feel any obvious lumps but it was a bit like glandular fever - very achy. Then the pain moved to my teeth and my ears.
The pain is not constant and comes and goes throughout the day but it never goes away completely.
Less bothersome issues include dry itchy eyes, some tingling around my nose and random headaches.
I realise everyone is different but I was wondering if anyone else can make sense of any of these symptoms.
Hi Dave
I'm having exactly the same experience as you and feel that I'm being left/ignore. I'm now going ahead with a wisdom tooth extraction after a week of antibiotics which haven't worked, to eliminate this as the cause if the ongoing pain like yours. I'm really not getting anywhere because in MAY I pushed for an ultrasound on my neck and the oncologist contacted me urgently saying they had found a new 'something' on my thyroid bed and wanted to do another thorough ultrasound. This was done and 2 suspicious looking lymph nodes in the area of pain were checked with FNA and result no cancer. The problem is they aren't now testing this new thing on my thyroid bed!..saying it could be a nodule, or something surgical material left in 3.5 years ago...or...they don't know... I'm feeling so let down and worried and suffering with this pain
Sorry Dave....I didn't mention that I have had thyroid cancer and had a full thyroidectomy. Maybe from my confusion her you can see that I am really stressed with my situation now. Reading your post again and considering my experience before the initial diagnosis, maybe we both have tooth problems... I do hope so xx
Thank you for the time to reply. I have not had a formal diagnosis but I can't help wonder if it is a Thyroid cancer (of which there are 4 or 5 types) if it could effect the jaw and ears.
Many people say you should not speculate but I can't help wondering if I have one problem (Thyroid) or more than one problem (Teeth). The pain under my jaw was like a cramping pain for several weeks but now it seems to have gone to the back of my mouth around the wisdom teeth. Also my ears feel full or like there has been an air pressure change.
My dentist took 2 x-rays but nothing has changed recently.
I just don't know what to do. Have the teeth removed or wait and see what the biopsy says.
Were you told what type of cancer you had ?
Dave
Yes Dave...I had Papillary Carcinoma but the tall cell variant with is apparently rare and aggressive but I had no symptoms/signs only a Dr who luckily pushed me to get a small lump checked after she felt it when I went with a sore throat from a summer cold...she pressed my neck a little bit too hard and the lump moved and caused me to lose my voice. This one woman saved my life because an almost 4cm cancer was found!
The MRI has shown a 2.8cm nodule but that is least of my symptoms. To be honest with you it's simply a matter of which type of cancer I have rather than if. My symptoms have progressed relatively slowly over the last 4 months. I feel calm about the potential outcome - BUT I am very angry about the response of lack of from my GP. I documented all my symptoms, provided photo's of my neck changes over the last 12 months and all he said was that my blood tests were ok. I've spent a considerable amount of money getting the required tests privately and finally now I have actual evidence of the Thyroid issue the GP is starting to pay attention.
I have irritation of my airways in my chest, pain in my neck, bottom teeth ears and it is getting slow worse all the time. I am eating quite a lot but my weight it slowly decreasing.
The NHS is just awful at the moment.
Dave
I do agree but what can we do. I totally empathise with you because my cancer was actually diagnosed whilst I was abroad for a short time...see my previous post...and I was the one saying to them (abroad) that everything should be fine, my UK Drs aren't worried
