Unsure how long things take

Hello everybody. On a recent ultrasound of my neck, they found cyst and nodules on both thyroids, a couple which looked like they needed further investigation. I was given an urgent referral and just managed to see the specialist at the end of the two weeks. He said the two lumps were a three on the scale of one to four but his radiologist would have a good look of all my neck and take biopsy of anything that needed it. I told him my throat had been sore for two months and I have a strangling sensation and like the skin is tight. He put a small camera in to my throat and told me that was caused by acid reflux? I’m left wondering when those symptoms stop being acid reflux and become related to the thyroid. Has anyone else had tightening around the throat with their condition? Anyway, he gave me a form and told me to go to imaging and arrange the ultrasound. When I got there I was told there were no more appointments and to give them a call if I hadn’t heard in a week! So I was just wondering how long is the wait likely to be because obviously I want this over and done with as soon as possible. Surely it’s not enough to just be able to see the specialist within two weeks then have to wait weeks for the ultrasound. Sorry if I sound panicky but I feel in a bit of limbo at the mo. Thanks for reading this guys.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

Waiting for tests and then the results of tests can be a really difficult time.

I don't know what the average waiting time if for the type of tests that you are going to be having, but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could pop something about your tests so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Thank you for your reply and hello to you. I will update my profile now and hopefully this will help with anyone replying to me. Thanks.

  • Hi Jonno77 and sorry to hear that you are having to have further investigations, but that is a good thing so they can determine whether any treatment is needed.  From my experience it has been a waiting game, but from my initial appointment to see a Consultant within the 2 week pathway, I was quite quickly referred for Ultrasound and ended up having 2 FNAs (biopsy) as well.  I then had a CT scan with Contrast dye which determined my diagnosis, but it was only a matter of a few weeks from my initial appointment at my doctors.  Try not to worry but keep pressing for that appointment for your Ultrasound.  Best wishes.

  • Hi Petal66. Thanks for your message. I suppose I just want it all over and done with so I can move one. Can I ask what symptoms you had, if any. I thought the sore throat I had was related to it but apparently not, so not sure if I would have found out about the nodules if I hadn’t requested an ultrasound. I will keep pressing for that next ultrasound and hopefully they can do any biopsies they need doing then. Thanks again.

  • I can appreciate that, I think I was the same but it it is still ongoing 1 year on.  My symptoms started months before I fund a lump on my thyroid, with not being able to clear my throat and I did have sore throats as well but not severe ones so didn't think anything about it.  On finding the lump I went to my doctors and was referred straight away.  Other symptoms started to show as not being able to clear my throat, swallowing nothing in particular and ending up not being able to get my breath and coughing a lot.  Still having problems as the nodule was cancerous and has destroyed one side of my vocal cords and means I am still having issues.  I am waiting for an operation to try and close the gap in the vocal cords and to improve my voice which has changed and is strained, but I have needed another round of RAI which I had a couple of weeks ago as the cancer had metastased to my lungs and a tiny nodule has grown and 2 more appeared since my first round of RAI.  Which is why I say keep on at them to get that US done and get sorted out as quickly as possible.  Hope there is nothing for you to worry about, but then I didn't know I had anything to worry about until I did. Best wishes and let me know how you go on.

  • I’m sorry to hear you’ve had what sounds like a really rough time. It makes me wonder why the specialist dismissed my sore throat and swallowing difficulties as reflux rather than anything else. I will keep in touch and wish you all the best.

  • Thank you @Jonno77 and I have had the scope many times to check my vocal cords and acid reflux was mentioned early on but they soon realised it wasn't that.  Hopefully in your case it is x

  • Hope they get you sorted soon petal66, please can I ask how was the radiation treatment for you? Mum is struggling with hers and it’s on pause because it made her throat swell.

  • Mine was Radioactive Iodine treatment, so swallowing a radioactive pill basically, which did make my neck the first time swell a little but not too much to be uncomfortable.  I am assuming your mum is having Radiation treatment which will be different and probably have more side effects.  Usually over a few weeks and several sessions a week?  Sorry to hear that it is making her throat swell.  Are they intending waiting a while and starting treatment again?
