suspicious for metastatic lymph node in left sternoclavicular joint

Hello,

I am new to the forum, so let me provide a bit of my medical history first.

I am 35 years old woman and was diagnosed with thyroid papillary carcinoma in July 2022. I underwent a left thyroidectomy in September and completion surgery in December 2022. Everything has been going relatively smoothly, and the communication between the hospital, my GP, and myself has been great. Since December, I have been taking Levothyroxine and have been feeling okay. However, things have become quiet after I had my radioactive iodine treatment in April 2023 at another hospital. There have been zero communication since then.

Recently, I became curious about the whole-body scan that was performed after the administration of iodine, so I ordered the documentation to take a look. It was during this review that I discovered there is a tracer avid lymph node measuring 1.1 cm posterior to the left sternoclavicular joint, which is suspicious for a metastatic lymph node. It's relatively small and I am not sure I understand correctly the 'tracer avid' part, but I am surprised that nobody has reached out to me regarding this finding.

I see that there are many people here who have undergone lymph node removal, and I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience with a lymph node in the sternoclavicular joint. I am not overly worried as I am hoping that no news is good news, but at the same time, some reassurance would be appreciated. I am planning to visit my GP with the report and see if they can assist.

I am also not entirely sure what should happen after RAI. Am I meant to have another scan?

If any of you have gone through something similar, I would greatly appreciate your input.

  • Hi

I had 5 lymph nodes removed with my first surgery and three tested positive for cancer but that's all the detail they gave me, subsequently I had the other half removed and more lymph nodes removed and am waiting for results and RAI.

My advice and that of my surgeons is to chase things up, I am not sure your gp will help but I think you have access to a thyroid nurse via this forum not sure where though.

i hope you get some answers soon and its positive news

  • Hi Again

Thought this might interest you, I have just received my letter re my RAI treatment and read this at the bottom:

A whole-body gamma scan will be arranged for you to have 48 hours after you have received your Radioiodine treatment. On discharge all your follow-up appointments will have been confirmed and given to you by the Ward team. The next medical follow up will be 2 weeks post treatment by telephone and 3 monthly thereafter.
  • Hi,

Thank you so much for getting back to me. I have contacted Clinical Nurse Specialist and to be fair she was surprised I haven't had any appointments yet. As your letter says, I should have been seen about 4 weeks post RAI, and I should have been given those appointments upon my discharge.

Even more strange that my whole body scan actually did show something. Nevertheless I am on their radar now and hopefully I will hear from them soon :) Good luck with your RAI. Let me know how it goes and if you have any questions.

  • Hello

I hope everything goes well for you

have you had any answers for the lump was in your test? I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer I have surgery next week and I feel a lump on the area you are talking about, but doctor said Pet didn’t show it , it is on my colorbone area but very clise to my neck

  • Perhaps I am being overly simplistic, but if the lump was already there and the PET scan didn't spot it, that lump isn't cancerous.

    Best wishes

    Barbara
