Thyroglobulin Jump

Hi All,

Got a situation that’s making me slightly anxious and wondering if anyone has had any similar experience.

I had a total thyroidectomy in 2015 followed by RAI and was given the all clear a year later. My thyroglobulin results have consistently been <2 ever since and my consultant said I was at very low risk of recurrence.

However, in the past year my thyroglobulin level has jumped from 0.4 in Summer 21 to 1.2 in Summer 22. I had an appointment today where my consultant explained that the way they test now is more sophisticated and they can pinpoint the specific level more, and that they can’t be sure if this has always been the case, but she wants to keep a much closer eye on it. We discussed next options if it does escalate further, which from the way she was talking I think she expects it to.

Has anyone here been in this position before, and if so what happened? Any comments appreciated.

Thank you

  • Yes

    Exactly same for me.

Had total thyroidectomy in January 2019 followed by rai treatment in April.

Thyroglobulin readings always in single figures usually below 2. Last reading, however in November 2022 was 2.52. So rising.

I am being kept on a high dose of thyroxine therapy, currently 175mg per day to surpress it.

My oncologist is reviewing me every 6 months and says I may end up being 'zapped' again with rai at some future point. He's going to put it off as long as possible though as it's not good for you to have it too often.

He thinks there's possibly a recurrence but too small to show up on scans -yet.

All I can say is ask all the questions you need answered to your oncologist.  Try and enjoy yourself as much as you can without worrying too much.

Wishing you good luck Fingers crossed x

  • Hi Herbertlump,

Thank you for your reply, and sorry to hear that you are also going through this.

In many ways that’s very encouraging, mainly that they don’t see it as a matter of urgency and that they are keeping an eye on it ready to act if necessary.

I’m going for my blood test tomorrow so I should know more next week depending on results.

Hope everything works out for you, thanks again!
