Follow up appointment with endocrinology

Hello, I’ve been lurking a bit here since diagnosis and treatment. Thanks for providing this space and for your help and warmth.

A month ago had a total thyroidectomy to be followed up with radio iodine, perhaps in the new year.

I have seen a few posts with people discussing referrals to oncology for this treatment, at the moment all I have in the future is an appointment with endocrinology. The ENT doctor I saw for follow up after surgery said I should expect an invitation for the RAI, or at least an appointment in preparation for it. I assumed that it would be with nuclear medicine or oncology.

have you had endocrinology appointments? When I received the appointment I assumed it would be more to do with thyroid hormone management etc.

thanks

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet, so I've searched for 'endocrinology' within this group and found these pervious posts where people have mentioned it. You could have a look through some of the more recent posts to see if any of them help you.

It would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi @Tonic333.  I had my surgery at the end of July and am due to have RAI on 7 Dec, so on my low iodine diet at the moment.  I had my operation in Nottingham, was referred there from Lincoln, now referred back to Lincoln for RAI.  I saw my Oncologist for the first time recently, but have not seen an Endocrinologist and I think the Oncologist is dealing with my medication at present, but that may well change.  I have just had my blood tests for Thyroid TSH and T4 levels and she said in her letter that she would be reviewing my medication when she gets the results.

  • Thanks for your reply. I wonder what that appointment will be, the ENT seemed to think that it would be regarding the preparation for RAI but I was surprised it was with endocrinology.

thanks for the info regarding your appointments, I wish you all the best with your treatment

  • It could be for monitoring your medication @Tonic333 as it would be Encology dealing with your RAI as far as I am aware, but you never know it may well be that they have decided you do not need RAI.  Do you have a MacMillan nurse who could follow this up for you?  I was told if there was anything I was unsure about I could ask anything I wanted to and if they didn't have the information they would find out for me.  This was a nurse at my meeting with the Oncologist and another was at my appointment when I was diagnosed and I was given contact details for them.
