Hi everyone. Im just reaching out to try and ease my anxiety about getting my results...I know you all understand.
I had a hemi thyroidectomy 4 weeks ago after a fna result of 3f. On the otherwise I have 3a nodules but I have chosen to watch and wait with them at the moment....one step at a time.
My surgeon is ringing me at 4 this afternoon with the results and I'm so scared what he is going to tell me and what I will have to tell my son's who are autistic. I was coping really well with the anxiety until yesterday.
Can you advise on how to deal with the results if they are cancer, and questions I should ask.
Thank you so much
Janet
Hi Janet
I had a hemi which turned out to be cancer then a total thyroidectomy. There are different types of thyroid cancer so I’m sure your consultant would tell you which type and whether it was contained within the thyroid or had spread anywhere else. I would also ask about treatment and time frames. When I found out I wasn’t at all prepared, I didn’t really ask any questions and carried on with my day. It hit me a couple of days later! If it is cancer try not to worry too much, thyroid cancer is very treatable and usually has a good prognosis. As for your children, I wouldn’t rush into telling them something that they may not understand or could scare them. Maybe wait and get some expert advice, I’m sure there are books or social stories you could access, depending on their ages, through school. I really hope this afternoon goes well for you. Best wishes!
I would agree with Marg06 - don't rush into telling your children. Get your head around your situation first. And prognoses with thyroid cancers are so good that you may not really need to tell them too much whilst you're being treated.
Of course, it might be nothing and all the worry will have been wasted. Let's hope so.
Best wishes
Barbara
