Now for sure specialist is saying genetic my follicular papillary thyroid cancer.
It started with niece in Rome being diagnosed then 2 brothers and nephew ,1 in Glasgow found through cat scan after heart attack with mestaticism to spine, hasnt had his thyroidectomy yet. Niece in Rome monitored but no rai yet. Another nephew diagnosed with bowel cancer, seemingly connected, and now another niece has been given thyroidectomy after all checks. My own kids checked and told not ready for thyroidectomy as yet . I now myself at radio iodine stage. Have heard that thyroid problems are major in South Italy. Anybody else know about the genetic correlations .
Most thyroid cancers are NOT genetic.
However, some mutations such as PTEN and Cowden's Syndrome can lead to higher risks of TC (amongst other cancers).
There's also a link between endocrine cancers - there's a group in the UK called AMEND for people with multiple endocrine cancers.
There's a type of medullary thyroid cancer that can occur in very young children.but that's very different to the differentiated cancers.
But, honestly, in 12 years on this site, I've not seen more than a couple of genetically related follicular or papillary TCs.
So, I'm really interested to know how your doctors found this genetic link and what it's called.
Best wishes
Barbara

Will keep information coming as receive (and understand) as it goes. Meeting at Beatson on Tuesday to discuss rai , and waiting on geneticist contacting me. Have already been in touch with my daughters to call them in for tests.
Thanks for answer but we must be `special`
We certainly are special. Upon meeting with my consultant yesterday he said we are the talk of the ENT surgeon circle in Scotland and they are all discussing the family cases . My results showed multi focal papillary cancer and I too will be getting Rai at the Beatson based on this family history and results . Completion surgery is this week
