Question on External Beam Therapy ahead of RAI

Hi everyone,

so I finally got the diagnosis of Follicular Papillary with mets in Sacrum in December. I also had to find out through a letter that I have another tumour on my hip (that's a story for another day).

I met with the Oncologist today who advised they may want to do External Beam Therapy on my Sacral tumour to get it under control. Currently it's pressing on nerves and I am in a good deal of pain. She said the RAI can temporarily enlarge tumours before they shrink so wants to avoid this happening and causing further issues.

Can anyone share their experience of this?

Many thanks

Caroline

  • Hi Caroline and a very warm welcome to the online community

I had a different type of cancer and didn't have External Beam Therapy, so can't share any experiences, but noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. By responding to you it will 'bump' your post back to the top of the discussion thread where it'll be easier to spot.

I've searched the group for people who mention External Beam Therapy and found these previous posts. Unfortunately most of the posts are quite old but you could still have a read through them.

While you're waiting for replies it would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi Laline
I haven't heard of people having treatment with EBR before RAI - the other way around is more typical - but that doesn't mean it's not a smart idea.
Which hospital are you with? Did you ask if this is something they do very often?

I have had a few thyroid cancer friends have EBR but they don't use the site anymore. Two had EBR on their necks and it's particularly unpleasant in that area because it interferes with swallowing and can cause a lot of problems with eating. For yours, I'm sure it won't be the most fun you've ever had, but you would avoid those side effects.

The other had it on her hip and said it really did help to ease the pain.

For complex thyroid cancer cases, I always recommend people get in touch with Kate Farnell at the Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust up in Newcastle. She's incredibly well connected and the most likely person I can think of to help advise if what's being suggested makes complete sense.

    Good luck

    Best wishes

    Barbara
