I am now 9 months post treatment for papillary thyroid cancer and just had my first set of bloods and ultrasound for dynamic risk stratification. When I went for my ultrasound the radiologist said there were lymph nodes that didn’t look like the others but he wasn’t worried and it might need a biopsy at some point!
I know until my thyroglobulin results come back there isn’t much of a conclusion to reach but the more I think about the ultrasound the more angry I get. I was literally in there for five minutes maximum and if there was something untoward why didn’t they just biopsy it there and then. It felt really flippant but has made me worry so much.
What are other people’s experiences of risk stratification after treatment?
I can't see anything on your profile about which country you are in. Most of us here are from the UK and it would be unusual for an ultrasonographer to be qualified to do a Fine Needle biopsy. If you are in a country where that's 'normal', then perhaps you are justified in your annoyance.
Best wishes

That's very interesting. You're with the best hospital in the north west, so I'm sure there's a reason for what they did - or rather didn't do. Perhaps it's something that has to go to the MDT for discussion before they start prodding you. I really don't know. Have you had an ultrasound-guided FNA before?
Best wishes

Hi Barbara yes I had one when I first found the original lump. I know they are a great team I think it’s maybe that this is my first big follow up since RAI and I am on edge so comments that may not mean a lot to the doctors set of a level of anxiety that maybe the cancer has come back already.
I know that without the thyroglobulin results the ultrasound on its own doesn’t really say anything and that this will probably be a watch and wait for the next six months.
Oh yes! The capacity for our minds to create catastrophic conclusions from a glance or a throwaway word is almost endless. I remember having a scan - post hemi, pre completion - and I'd been asked to get Lungs and Liver. The scanner man (at a private scanner company) came out and said "Oh, I did your kidneys whilst I was at it".
I went home and convinced myself that I must have lit up like a Christmas tree. Worried for hours and then called the scanner centre and told them I was upset and I wanted to know WHY he'd don that.
Turned out, he routinely does 3 scans and thought I wasn't getting value for money (or my BUPA) by only having 2. he told me in case the consultant asked WHY he'd done the kidneys.
These people have no idea what power they have to mess with our minds.
Best wishes
