Hi, was just wondering if anyone has had permanent damage to their voice after surgery. I'm having my second surgery on Thursday and the surgeon has warned me that there is a higher chance of damage this time. Thanks

  • Hi Pitch, I had a total thyroidectomy and no damage to my vocal chords at all. I think it’s not all that common to be honest especially long term damage. I’ve heard of people being a bit croaky after surgery but then this goes away. I’ve yet to hear of anyone suffering serious vocal chord damage. Good luck! X

Hi Pitch, I have vocal cord paralysis following a total thyroidectomy, which resulted in a weaker voice and occasional aspiration. I understand this is rare.

In 2018 (9 years after my thyroidectomy) I underwent surgery to re position the damaged vocal flap known as Thyroplasty. This has been very successful in strengthening my voice and preventing aspiration.

    I hope all goes well!

Thanks to both of you for the reply. Just a little update, I'm back home after my surgery and I still have a whisper of a voice which is a positive, last time it took about 3 months. Thanks again.
