Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone is experiencing anxiety or panic attacks after a thyroidectomy. I have always had anxiety but I feel it has got severely worse since my 2 operations. I've been experiencing frequent panic attacks and low mood. I'm wondering if it is something to do with being on the wrong dose of levothyroxine or if my calcium levels are low? Any help will be appreciated
Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community
I'm sorry to read that you have been experiencing frequent panic attacks along with a low mood since having a thyroidectomy.
I can't help with your question but noticed that you hadn't had any response yet. By replying to you it will 'bump' your post back to the top of the discussions list where it'll be more easily spotted.
You could also post your question about whether the levothyroxine or low calcium levels could be causing this in the ask a nurse section of the community and one of the specialist nurses will aim to reply within 2 working days.
When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Hi Laura G,
Like people say it is a journey and usually has its ups and downs! good days and not so good days and of course there is always the nagging thought at the back of you mind....What if! My journey has been a 6 year marathon and finally after my last Iodine treatment have been given the "All Clear" I had two ops and that was after being advised after my first scan to leave the lumps alone they are cysts! I wasnt very happy with that and got another appointment and said I want the Cysts removed! No problem so Op was done and at the consultation for the biopsy of what was removed to be told Cancerous cells had been found! As the neat line of cut was long I had presumed the two had been removed! So thats why I had the second op, this time quite a long time in theatre (6 hours)as the "C" was very close to my voice box and had been warned I may lose my voice! Such was the brilliance of the surgeons Mr Hall and Mr Thomas all that happened was I can no longer sing! mind you I couldnt before anyway! After effects bit tired bit hoarse, only medication was paracetamol if needed.
The last CT scan result was phoned through by a member of the team Dr Alex Williams who sounded just as exited at giving me the news as I was at receiving it! Celebration has just been by phoning family and friends that the Journey can have a good ending!
Did I have any dark moods or panic attacks ? No not one! Did I scream out "why me"? Not once! I just took it on board and with my secretary doing all the appointments and making sure I was OK, .......My lovely wife (secretary) who had "C" worse than mine again has successfully made the journey! through 3 bouts of Chemo!
Hope this will give you some insight and help in some small way. Good luck and make sure you talk to friends and family ! A trouble shared is a trouble halved!
Marimba`s better half! lol
