Hi there
I had TC just over two years ago mixed non seminoma PT1. When I had my bloods done when I had my tumour prior to surgery my AFP was 5. I then had my left testicle removed and been in surveillance since.
Recently I was asked to re do my last bloods. I’ve found out the AFP had gone to 8 but in re test was at 7. Nurse says this is fine but I just wondered what are normal levels? What are other people’s experiences? I would have thought if my AFP was at 5 when I had the cancer surely anything higher is a warning sign. Or does it not work like that?
many thanks for your help and hope you are all doing well on your individual journeys :)
best wishes Andy
Hi Andy,
The “norm” for AFP is generally accepted to be anything under 10.
The trend of your AFP is what is important, rather than any individual reading. Your AFP went down, a sure sign you do not have TC. A continuously rising AFP would be worrying. Eminent TC specialist Dr Einhorn has stated that TC can not be assumed until a reading of over 20.
As yours has shown a decline after a increase I would rest easy. Studies show AFP bounces around post treatment for TC, so I’m happy to say your are just very ordinary!
Hope that helps, take care
dan
Hi Andrew,
Obviously I’m no doctor....I suspect in your case, as the cancer was caught early it was not effecting your blood.
i was stage 2 but my bloods were also normal when initially diagnosed.
take care
