Just been diagnosed with stage 2 and have been offered removal of stomach quickly.  Trying to balance life after surgery with the eating restrictions and toll on your body or go for quality of life and hope the cancer is slow growing as I am  86 but fit.  Are there any older people on the forum who have gone through the surgery and recovered well.

  • Hi  I’m so sorry you find your self here, there’s not much on stomach cancer but this forums ok and helped me and my husband through some hard times so please stay with us.
It’s my husband who at the time of having his stomach removed he was 79. The hospital he was at doesn’t give chemo to over 75s as said they found they didn’t do so well with it. So he had is stomach out 11 Jan this year, obviously we was very scared of what the future would be like regarding eating , he did think for a day or so of not having the op but soon decided against that. So the op took 5 hours, that night he was able to phone me ok and seemed to be doing good. He didn’t have any problems while In hospital, was out on the 7th day. Eating the first few weeks was a struggle for him (and me wondering what to give him)  now he can eat anything ( may struggle a bit with bread)  he has smaller portions, also about 3 snacks during the day.

If they didn’t think you could manage the op they wouldn’t be offering it to you but it’s your decision to make. They said to my husband without the operation he would have about 2 years to live, that’s scary to think that.
Good luck with whatever you decide xxxx
