Hi guys

this is is my first post. First of all I would like to say how amazing you all are Heart

My dad was diagnosed with stage 4 gastric cancer end of July this year. We were told that it was too aggressive for surgery and chemo would prolong his life. He starting taking EOX therapy beginning of August. His first round of treatment they only gave him the O and X which went really well. He went in for his 2nd round where they added the E part in and it’s just gone badly since. He was put into hospital that very same night with chest pains but they couldn’t see any problems and put it down to a side effect. He suffered terribly from sickness and diarrhoea to the point he ended up phoning the helpline a week later and got out back into hospital where he is just now. They said he had an infection and gave him antibiotics through IV. He’s had numerous scans and another endoscopy when they said the tumour in his stomach has internal bleeding and had fluid in his stomach. He got a tube inserted to his tummy today to start to drain the fluid. He has got some relief and managing to eat again but he’s been on a morphine driver for 5 days now. No one is telling us if this is serious or not and I really need to know as one of my brothers is in the RAF and currently working away in America.

Should the fluid be yellow? How serious is this?

I would appreciate it anyone could shine a light in our situation

thanks

  • Hi and a warm welcome to the online community

I'm not a member of this group, so can't answer your questions, but I noticed that your post had gone unanswered. It could be that no one in this group has had the same set of circumstances as your dad or that the person with the right experience hasn't seen your post yet.

The best person to ask questions about how serious your dad's situation is would be, with your dad's permission, his clinical nurse specialist (CNS). They usually know what's happening and will help with your questions. If you have already approached his CNS and still haven't had your questions answered then you could speak to the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) at the hospital. Part of their role is to liaise between doctors and patients and they should be able to find out what's happening for you.

I hope that you since you posted this message your dad has continued to improve.

Yes. The colour of the fluid is normally yellowish. This fluid is present normally in every body but is secreted excessively in advanced stomach cancer. It is not serious as such it is just an indication that the disease is advanced. It could respond to chemotherapy but taking the fluid out is done to give relief from the fluid pressure temporarily. Did they mention the cause of your dad’s pain?  Fluid in the stomach is not normally painful. I hope this helps. Deya
