Hi everyone

What's everyone's experience with weight loss after gastrectomy? I had a partial end of November and was 10.3 stone before. I'm now 9 stone.

I try not to get hung up on it as I know weight loss is expected and I'm also in mop up chemo so there's that adding to it but I don't want to miss any signs of anything else going on either.

  • Hi, try not to worry too much, I had a partial last April and it took a few months to start putting weight back on, now I’m eating much the same as before and have put weight back on, just eat small portions 5-6 times a day, also snacks like wotsits and quavers are good because they dissolve in your mouth. There’s a book called The art of eating without a stomach which is really helpful, good luck and ask as many questions as you need to x

  • This is really helpful. Did you suffer with nausea when eating certain things? I tend to get mild nausea in the mornings.

  • Hi, I took anti sickness tablets when necessary, it’s trial and error with some foods, but I have another try with them at later dates as things change especially taste buds, just have what you fancy. Have only just started drinking coffee again, I’ve reduced my sugary snacks as these leave your system quickly and can cause or enhance dumping syndrome. x

  • I'm so glad you responded. Seems we have a very similar experience. I do take the anti sickness if it gets bad. Good to know it's not just me.

Can I ask, how long did it take for the aching to stop? I get quite achy around the surgery area which I assume is normal. More so when having chemo as I'm a lot less mobile...

  • I think like me you’re expecting too much too soon, it’s very early days for you, also you will be tired, give yourself a chance to heal x

  • Hi

I lost weight after a partial gastrectomy and before surgery too! I got quite stressed about it! For the first time in my life as I had spent years trying to lose weight!

I didn’t have chemo after surgery so I was able to gain weight sooner. I think it’s important to get through the last lot of chemo, then your recovery can begin.

I focused on high protein and high calorie foods as I built back up.  I found it useful to count the calories I was eating v what I was using to make sure I was eating enough.  But I wouldn’t do that until you have finished chemo, as it’s hard enough to cope with the nausea etc!

    You’re nearly there! X

  • Hi, I lost 2 stone after a total gastronomy last July followed by a chest infection. I then completed 4 x chemo Flot mop up  sessions.

Once the chemo finished I expected to start to put on weight but I did not.  My consultant said I was  impatient and it would take months before my weight increased.  He was right and now, 2 months after all my treatment finished I have started to put on weight.  I have gained half a stone and I am now eating more in small portions.   If I eat too much I get bad indigestion / hiccups / burping.    My only issue is bile reflux which can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful but my consultant says this will eventually go.

I had good advice from my dietitian so hopefully you have been appointed one as well.

    Good luck with your recovery.
