Hi,I have been very concerned about my husband who had total gastrectomy in December.  He seemed to be getting on well but developed a lot of bile reflux. For the last few weeks he has been getting a lot of pain after eating and feels like the food isn't going down properly .last week he ate a few mouthfuls and it  all came back up.He has lost so much weight and has no energy as he isn't eating enough. He had an endoscopy on Saturday which found a grade D oesophaghitus.  They said his oesophagus is badly inflamed .He has been prescribed lanzoprazole. He has to have another endoscopy in 6 weeks. Has anyone else had this please as I'm so worried. He has lost 7 stone now. Would be grateful for any advise, thankyou

  • I am so sorry to hear about your husbands condition. I myself had the same operation three years ago. I have had to have a stent fitted in my oesophagus every few months as the valve at the top will not stay open. The surgeon is hoping that after the next two ops the valve will remain open. When I had the main operation shortly after I was unable to eat and drink and I got in touch with the Cancer nurse who quickly organised a appointment to have a camera put down my throat. This highlighted heavy scaring around were the valve were. Hopefully your husband may have the same that I had. Taking to the surgeon he explained that when they do this operation the nerves that control the valves are taken out with the part of the stomach and there is a 50/50 chance the values stay open or closed. In my case the bottom one stayed open and the top one remained closed. Hope this small amount of information may help. All the best for his speedy recovery. Regards John.

  • Hi,thankyou for your reply. It's good to know that you have had a stent fitted and I will keep that in mind when we see the ncmillan team.
