Hi, I am looking for some advice/help. My dad currently has stage 4 gastric cancer with peritoneal metastasis. We were told it couldn't be cured, but could have palliative chemotherapy to prolong his life. He has since started XELOX, with iv given every 21 days and tablets to be taken twice a day.

We recently found out he has a DPD deficiency so his treatment has to be reduced. He's now worried that the treatment won't work with a reduced amount of therapy, is this the case?

He is also currently suffering from pain in his groin which doesn't seem to be going away. Has anyone else suffered from this? Any help/advice would be very much appreciated, Thank you.

  • Sorry I can’t advise, just letting you know I’m thinking of you and your dad, hopefully someone will be able to offer you some support on this forum

  • Sorry to hear about your dad , my diagnosis in july is identical stage 4 adenocarcinoma  with peretonial  nodes..i was started on xenox also known as oxaliplatin,  with 2 twice a day capecitabine  tablets i was also started on nivalumab  immunotherapy . My chemo tablets were cut back and the infusions  were stopped after 4 rounds  because of stomach issues.but the scans did show the cancer had responded and shrunk.. i am now reliant on the immunotherapy.. I was told the always allow for reactions and can cut and tailor doses to the individual as everyone is different, I did ask my oncologist the same question you are asking and he said the plan is to kill the cancer not the patient and no doubt they will monitor closely as the have more treatments in their arsenal. Mine was cut because my oncologist believed that it could be affecting my stomach nerves and the gi specialist fitted another stent to reinforce the original....I hope this helps ..

  • So sorry to hear about your dad. I’m sure the reduced amount will help too or they wouldn’t offer it to him. He needs to speak to his medical team re pain in his groin. It is worth checking out. Take care x

  • Your comment helps me too.. Wish you all the best with your treatment. x
