Hi everyone

Just looking for a little advice on a looming gastrectomy on behalf of my Mum in Law who was unfortunately diagnosed with a cancerous stomach ulcer 4 weeks ago.

She is 67 and the Consultants are hoping it is at an early stage so fingers crossed can remove along with the lymph nodes. They aren’t too sure if it’ll be a total or 80% gastrectomy due to the position and whether she will need chemo afterwards.

unfortunately my Mum in Law has had pneumonia twice so I don’t think her lungs are the best they can be ( non smoker ). She is having another cpx test this week in preparation.

Please can I ask for any information for her prior to surgery- she’s been told she will be in ITU with picc line and have a tube for feeding for a while.

I’ve read that lots suffer with malabsorption afterwards and end up

on cholesevalem or the equivalent ( I know of which due to liver surgery myself and malabsorption) - are there any other hideous side effects afterwards and any tips at all I can forward onto her

thank you so

much in advance xx

  • Hi

i had a partial gastrectomy two years ago and you can read my Blog if you click on my name.  I had chemo before surgery but it was found at an early stage so I had no chemo after surgery.  I focused on walking a lot and putting on weight before surgery as I knew I would lose a lot after surgery.  I tried to get as fit as possible before surgery and followed the enhanced recovery pathway.  I was lucky and recovered really quickly

Happy to answer any questions you have.

    Take care x

    Jac
