Hi
I noticed a lump behind me knee about 3 weeks ago - I was on holiday at the time and booked in to the GP as soon as i was home, i had been experiencing some knee pain for the past few months but only mild and mostly when crossing legs etc so just thought nothing of it.
the lump is about 3/4 cm wide and is quite hard - only slightly tender to palpate and quite deep behind the knee
The GP appointment was booked with an MSK specialist at the surgery as I mentioned knee pain - the appointment was very thorough - he said it could be a bakers cyst - but then explained they’re normally caused by arthritis or injury - in 30 years old and have none of these - he said he’d refer for an ultra sound but non urgent - I did tell him I’m since having my baby at the beginning of the year - weight has dropped off me and I’m the lightest I’ve been in over 10 years - had to actually buy new jeans and leggings in size 6 as my previous 8/10 from pre baby were too big - he said the weight loss is gradual over 6 months so not a red flag, but I felt a bit worried about a non urgent referral so I went back to the GP Monday and saw a regular GP who advised I have low risk factor for a bakers cyst and thought it should be an urgent ultrasound so went to change it - finding the original MSK person (don’t think they were a doctor more nurse practitioner) had already escalated the referral after the appointment - stating query mass ?
I guess I’m just looking for some advise or reassurance about others symptoms before diagnosis ?
i know 2 people who passed away from sarcoma in the past year - both young - so I definitely have a bit of anxiety from that!
Hi GraceBB
Welcome to our community, I hope you find it useful.
As you probably know already sarcoma is rare so knowing two people who had it is extra rate. Glad you got the scan updated to urgent. Everyone here knows the pain of going through the diagnostic process when it all seems to take time, there is a page here about this.
<<hugs>>
Steve
My relative was initially advised the lump on the back of her knee was a bakers cyst but it was a sarcoma so keep pressing for a definite diagnosis. To reassure you though sarcoma uk said for everyone with a mass - one in a hundred will be a sarcoma so try not to worry but focus on getting a diagnosis.
Couldn't just read and not respond. Hope you are closer to your ultrasound. I originally had a lump left knew during pregnancy that I was told was a bakers cyst, so I didn't think to question. Unfortunately it was sacorma. My ultrasound misdiagnosed it. If in any doubt I would go again with your concerns and ask for a MRI. Like others have said this is very rare and more likely nothing, wishing you all the best
