Bronchoscopy and lung biopsy

I have an appointment for a lung biopsy tomorrow and the closer the time gets the more scared I am.  It sounds very unpleasant and I am prone to vaso vagal episodes after painful procedures.  Anyone had a lung biopsy?

  • Hi Nanci,

my wife has a bronchoscopy on the way to her eventual diagnosis. She was really worried about it but seemed to cope reasonably well and was back out the same day.

We were warned there was a very slight risk that it might end up meaning an overnight stay and there was one person on our ward for whom the happened but they did a lot of procedures that day - it seemed something like being on a production line and really very efficient.

They did find some unusual webbing in her lung and even managed to remove some of that and ended up finding she had some infection going on so Janice ended up on a load of antibiotics.

  • Hi Steve, it went ok actually, obviously not a recreational activity but very well handled.  They were testing a new slimmer scope.  And it allowed local anaesthetic to be sprayed as they went in.  Have to say tho I am very tired today I think it's the anxiety wearing me out.  They took biopsies from nodes on both sides and are hoping to get the results in time for the MDT meeting on Friday morning. The chest consultant said he will ring me in the afternoon with the results.  I have been very fortunate with all the staff I have met.  Hope you wife is well at the moment.

  • Hi Nanci,

Glad it went well - as you say not something to go for our out of simple curiosity but the doctors do have lots of experience.

Janice is remarkable well, two different chemo's seem to have put her cancer to sleep - 6 years now and counting and with lots of the right support we seem to have achieved living with cancer as opposed to dying from cancer.

We were out to our local farmers market today and come the platinum bank holiday weekend we have booked to go to Butlins.
