MOHS Surgery - is it ok to use suncream on scar?

I’m hope everyone is doing ok, it’s been a while since I last posted.  Well I had my MOHS surgery in October on the side of my face - the BCC  area was a lot bigger than I thought -  approx 4cm by 4cm.  I was unable to have a skin graft due to not having much skin  - so it was partially closed - the area around my eye had to be cut as well in order to stitch the wound.  I think I was in theatre longer having reconstruction than the actual MOHS surgery!  i was left with a deep open wound and it was an hour's trip by train every two weeks for the dressing to be changed.  It’s amazing how the body heals.  I’m now having laser treatment every 8 weeks plus steroid injections.   I’m still numb down the side of my face - even before the laser treatment - just wondered, if anyone else experienced this as well?

My concern is can I use suncream on the area.   If so, which one? The area is still red - still suffering with some stinging.  I will, of course be wearing a hat too!

Anyone else now worried about being out in the sun - even if covered up?

Take care x

  • Hi

Wow, it certainly sounds like you've been through a lot so sending a big ((hug)).

I haven't had the same operation and follow-up treatment as you, although I have had a wide local excision to remove a melanoma and simple surgery to remove a BCC both of which have left scars.

Because these areas were on my arm and chest, I can easily keep the areas covered rather than having to wear sunscreen. I think if I was in your position I'd seek advice from my hospital team as you are still receiving treatment and they would be best placed to offer advice.

As for being worried about being out in the sun, well the first year after my melanoma diagnosis I developed vampire like tendencies in that I tried to stay in the shade at all times, even to the extent that I'd cross the street to stay in the shade! I have relaxed more since then but do still make sure that I'm covered when I'm out in the sun.

  • Thank you for your kind words and advice - will certainly follow up with my hospital team.

Hope you are doing ok - big hug to you too!  Xx

  • I'm glad to hear that you're on the mend after your MOHS surgery, and I applaud your resilience throughout this challenging process. Your experience demonstrates the remarkable healing capacity of our bodies.

Regarding the numbness on the side of your face, it's not uncommon after such an extensive procedure, and it may take some time to resolve. However, each person's healing process is unique, and it could be beneficial to discuss this with your medical team.
